In attempt to get back in the habit of column writing, I must clean out all the ideas and happenings that I haven’t written about in the last several weeks.
Teachers are very important
I recently overheard some teachers talking and heard one of them remark – “I would never tell anyone to go into teaching now.”
If anything we should encourage the teachers of tomorrow.
Two of the greatest influences of my life were teachers – my high school English teacher, Mr. Smith, and my college advisor/teacher Lora DeFore.
Mr. Smith let my advanced placement class think outside of the box and for that I am grateful. There is not only one right way but many right ways.
He taught us to dream big!
Then, there is Lora, who pushed me and encouraged me and told me to find an internship or I wouldn’t get a job when I got out of college.
Lora’s gone
Sadly, Lora passed away after a long battle with cancer on Nov. 2.
And those Mississippi State University Communication Department students will be missing her style of teaching and her wisdom.
I was able to attend her memorial service and say goodbye. She lives on in her students, her family and her friends. She was 49.
Several weeks before her death, Lora said she was beyond blessed by knowing all the lives that she had touched.
She told one of her closest friends – “Knowing what I know now, if I had to choose between having a long and healthy life and leaving sooner than I want to but leaving with the knowledge that I did make a difference, I would choose this.”
Football is OVER
Don’t get me wrong, I love football. I always have.
It’s nice when things slow down a bit and you are actually able to go and do things as you please.
One of the highlights of the Ethel season was ending the season on a winning note. Winning the last two games is a great way to build up next year’s season.
Sure, there are some replacements and adjustments to make but I believe things are on the rise for the Tigers of Ethel! Time will tell.

We are a changed nation
Ten years ago come Sunday, a handful of fanatical thugs flew hijacked American airplanes into American buildings and what both we and the rest of the world had always thought of as America began to almost immediately change. Today, that 10-year-ago image is but a memory.
