A favorable forecast is being given on Attala’s cotton crop by a number of cotton growers throughout the county, reports County Agent Frank Buchanan, who adds that many of them predict, “We will make as much cotton or more than last year’s 10,500 bale crop with favorable conditions continuing until the crop is harvested.” The “white gold” traditional money crop of the county, is expected to be a boost to the economy of the area and the busy hum of the cotton gins in scattered areas of Attala is a heartening sound to many interested persons.

Doris Ann Blackwelder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Blackwelder of Kosciusko, will enter Nashville Business College in Nashville, Tenn., where she will be a member of the basketball team. She is a graduate of Kosciusko High School where she was an outstanding member of the basketball team.

Grand parade of pets before the judges’ reviewing stand and interested fairgoers at the rodeo arena opened the Pet Sow Tuesday night at the Central Mississippi Fair. First time ever staged here, the show was the opening entertainment feature of the fair under the supervision of Mrs. Henry Power, Mrs. Aileen Boyd, Mrs. Howard Wamble, L.W. Jordan Jr. and Kinsey Lowe. Background music was by Attala Music Company. Presenting prizes and ribbons to winners were Miss Donna Allen, Miss Sylvia Brown, Miss Donna Jo Brunt, Miss Susan White, Miss Gayle Sills and Miss Becky Gayden.

Climaxing annual Labor Day activities at the Kosciusko Country Club was the announcement of queen contest winners. Named Little Bitsy Miss was Lauren Fowler, four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mickey Fowler; Emily Kyle, Little Miss Country Club, eight year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Kyle; Angel Albin, 11, Junior Miss Country Club, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Albin; and Miss Country Club, Jenny Bailey, 15, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bailey.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday at 10:30 a.m. in front of the new Cochran Optical Dispensary in Bailey’s Northside Shopping Center. Gary Cochran, owner and manager of the dispensary, has been an optician for 15 years and his father, John W. Cochran of Jackson, is also an optician. Prior to opening the dispensary on Aug. 17 Cochran worked as an optician with Drs. Joe Joseph and Nell Niles in Kosciusko. He said the dispensary will fill eye glass prescriptions after the wearer has had his eyes examined by an optometrist

Debra Ables and Carol Bowles have recently passed state board examinations and have received their licenses as registered nurses. Mrs. Ables took her training at Hinds Junior College and Mrs. Bowles at the Grenada Center of Holmes Junior College. Both are on the staff at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital in Kosciusko.

Holmes Junior College auto mechanics instructor Dewight Myrick has assumed his new duties as assistant vocational technical director on the Goodman campus.

The Redbud has been named as Kosciusko’s official tree and the rose as the official flower in a recent promotion of the Kosciusko Garden Club. The project was carried out by the garden club in connection with the Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up campaign now in progress. Among other trees suggested were magnolia, dogwood and pine. Running a close race with the rose was the iris, and the dahlia. -

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lacey have received notification from the South America Indian Mission that they have been accepted as missionaries. They have been assigned to the country of Bolivia where the mission has been working since 1926. Lacy is presently serving as the Director of Christian Education in the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko. -
Long Creek holds motivational rally for upcoming state testing
More than 200 students and parents filled the Long Creek Elementary Gym in Sallis on May 2 for a pep rally to energize students for the upcoming state test.

Alice Faye Roberts Leslie, 95 year-old Weatherford, TX resident, made a recent trip to her native Mississippi and visited briefly in Attala and Leake Counties with relatives and reminisced about days of her youth.

Dale McBride will be the new coach for McAdams High School for the coming 1963-64 season. He will replace Charles Porter who is leaving to accept the head coaching job at Noxapater, it was announced by Glen Cain, Superintendent of McAdams School. -
