KOSCIUSKO —
A book review and poster contest were held in conjunction with the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration involving students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12 grade in Attala County Schools.
Students were asked to read a book about Dr. King and share their knowledge by creating a poster, writing a four-stanza poem or writing a 500-word essay.
Brent Newell, a senior at McAdams High School, was chosen as the winner of a $500 college scholarship for his essay. He was in attendance at the MLK birthday celebration and read his winning essay.

LaDana Clark, Long Creek, first place, portable DVD player, Feria Mays, Kosciusko Junior High School, second place, pre-paid AT&T cell phone, 6th, 7th, 8th grade.
In the 4th and 5th grade, Mikhayla Vaughn, Kosciusko Upper Elementary, first place, digital video camcorder/camera, DeMarcus Seawood, Long Creek Elementary, second place, CD boom box.
Demerea Moore, Long Creek Elementary, first place, razor scooter, Jordyn French, Kosciusko Middle Elementary, second place, microphone/amp set, 2nd and 3rd grade.
Serita Roby, Long Creek Elementary, first place, VTech Tote and Go laptop, Olivia Patterson, Kosciusko Lower Elementary, second, VTech Write & Learn touch tablet, 1st and kindergarten category.

An “apparently professional” safe cracking job on the vault at Kosciusko High School relieved the school of about $1,000 Thursday night sometime after 11 p.m. It was discovered by J.E. Burns, building custodian, about 6:15 Friday morning when he was unlocking the office for janitors. -

A majority of the Kosciusko retail merchants who are members of the Chamber of Commerce have indicated their intention of beginning the usual Thursday afternoon closing on Jan. 12. A heavy majority of those polled by the Merchants Subcommittee indicated preference for the same date as was observed last year. -
