Willene Carpenter, 17, representing Kosy High School, won first place in the annual Attala oratorical contest here sponsored by Fred Wasson Post No. 44 of the American Legion. Winner of second place was Brant Lee Jenkins, 15, representing McAdams High School.

Mrs. Edith Bell Mayo, Attala County’s Chancery Clerk, is the first woman in Attala County to receive a “promotion” in public office. She served two terms as tax assessor and won out in the August primaries over six opponents to realize her ambition of serving as Chancery Clerk.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 190 of Kosciusko participated this week in observance of the 1960 Golden Jubilee. A colorful ceremony was held at the Christian Liberty M.B. Church Sunday, Feb. 21. The celebration included patriotic songs, scouting songs, demonstrations of craft and other scout lore. Twenty four members received tender foot pens and 11 have qualified for the 2nd class pens. Making the awards was Joe D. Joseph of this city. The troop is operating under a charter granted to Tipton Street School with H.C. Redmond institutional representative. L. L. Keaton is chairman of the troop committee. Other committee members are William White, J.D. Winters, and Allen Kern. James E. Williams is Scout Master, and Vanual Gladney is assistant Scout Master.

J.M. Tubb of Jackson, state superintendent of education, will be the guest speaker at the meeting of Kosciusko’s Parent-Teacher Association Tuesday night, March 8. Rev. Howard Scarborough is program chairman.

Chairmen of key DAR committees are making plans for the annual pre-Easter style show of women’s fashions. They are Mrs. Tom Shields, publicity; Mrs. Jack Olson, decorations; Mrs. Robert Graham, regent of Samuel Hammond DAR Chapter; Mrs. Lewis Ward, overall chairman; Mrs. E.C. Fenwick, program; Mrs. J.C. Cheek, merchants and models.

Attalan Jimmy Holloway of Possumneck will get his picture placed on a wall in the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson. He’s been selected to the Mississippi Horseman’s Hall of Fame for 1985. His picture will join about five other distinguished folks who share the same honor.

Girl Scouts Jenny Lawrence and Monica Stevens, who were tops in cookie sales, delivered the 455 boxes they sold during the recent sale. The two Girl Scout troops in Kosciusko sold a total of 2,016 boxes. Jenny, daughter of Debbie Lawrence, sold 190 boxes, and Monica, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Stevens, sold 263 boxes, qualifying them as tops in sales.

Attala County Association of Educators members voted 22 to 14 this week in favor of joining a teacher strike, but still fell well short of the number needed to ratify the action. The vote means that Attala County teachers will not immediately be participating in a walkout over pay issues that has closed classes in several south Mississippi schools and threatened to spread.

Students from the Kosciusko-Attala Vo-Tech Center in Kosciusko participated in the district VICA United States Skill Olympics held Friday on the campus of Holmes Junior College. Taking honors in the competition were Maurice Fullilove, Edward Rimmer, Ronny Henderson, Bruce Downs, James Bayne, Bubba Willoughby, Kevin Cross, Randy Rachel, Reginald Gregory and Steve Deason.

Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Glenn Deason of Kosciusko announce he engagement of their daughter, Debra Elizabeth, to Robert Hayes Hulett, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Staten J. Hulett of Vaiden. The wedding will take p lace on April 20 at Hebron Baptist Church.
