Weekend Retreat Greenwood couples spend time away from hustle and bustle in cabin

KOSCIUSKO — Plans for their lake house were found on the internet and were designed with windows ideal for watching the snow fall if built in locations  such as Colorado where snow is prevalent. The plans were ideal for Steve and Melinda Noble’s lake house located in the Hesterville Community.

The windows probably won’t be used much for watching snow but will offer scenes just as impressive as snow might be. From every room there’s a view of the lake and its surroundings. Geese skimming the surface, a fish occasionally breaking the water, a deer venturing almost to the door are among what one might see from any of the windows of the lake house. The surrounding woods offer a year-round display with the changing seasons.

But, the windows of the lake house are not the only attraction. A deck across the back of the house is the perfect setting for entertaining. Walkways and steps lead to a pier where fishing is made easy. Every area offers what one might define as the epitome of relaxation.

Family get-togethers

“We enjoy having family get-togethers here,” Melinda said. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James “Sonny” Cummins, live nearby and her brother, Dr. Ronny Cummins of Corinth has plans for building a cabin nearby.

Every Friday afternoon finds Steve and Melinda leaving their home in Greenwood and heading for the lake house and a weekend of relaxing.

“When we leave Greenwood, I can feel my blood pressure gradually dropping in anticipation of getting here,” said Melinda, who is a pediatric doctor at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.

A panoramic view is offered from the den’s spacious, open area through the windows spanning from floor through vaulted ceiling. Seating areas are grouped for enjoying the lake. Then there’s a wood-burning heater designed by her father. On cold days it adds its contribution to the cozy atmosphere. “I had to have one of my daddy’s heaters,” she said.

Kitchen, dining

The spacious kitchen and dining area is adjacent to the great room, with two built-in stained glass windows bought at an auction. Of interest is the table which was made by Melinda’s brother Ronny from boards salvaged when Vickers Café on the courthouse square was demolished. The table was a gift to the couple when the lake house was completed.

The master bedroom and adjacent bath completes the lower level. It too has windows that afford a view with a deck just beyond double doors. Of special interest among furnishings, and a treasure, is the bedspread crocheted  by Melinda’s great-grandmother, the late Ella Oakes.

Bedrooms of daughters Marliegh and Stephenie are on the second level. Marleigh is a student at Millsaps College and Stephenie, Mississippi State. A large sitting area, bedroom and bath, along with a nook which Melinda said is a perfect place to read are found upstairs.

A perfect place for entertaining is the sitting area on the upper level. Marleigh has been hostess to sorority pledges on weekends. The same view of the lake is afforded from the second floor loft through the windows extending to the ceiling.

The lake house is the scene of family gatherings. Friends of the Nobles’ from Greenwood have been among the recipients of their hospitality. The Natchez Trace Festival and other events have been occasions for having other visitors.

Of interest throughout the lake house are furnishing which according to Melinda “evolved.”  She credited her mother with many of the furnishing including the two stained glass windows in the kitchen.

Landscaping

Grounds are landscaped with graveled walkways bordered with plants. A fountain and old-fashioned pump run continuously with water pumped from the lake. The constant trickle of the water adds to the sense of peacefulness of the surroundings.

When not enjoying the lake’s view, there’s other views just as impressive. The wooded area surrounding the house offers year-round beauty. Occasionally there’s the opportunity for a peek at some of the year-round inhabitants that venture from their habitat.

Melinda and Steve find that the lake house never fails to beckon offering just what they need after a busy week.
