A honey-haired blonde, Miss Ann Nowell, is the new Miss Kosciusko after winning Friday night over a field of eight contestants in the annual event sponsored by the Kosciusko Jaycees.

Miss Gale Tehleen Sanders, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tarver Sanders of Kosciusko, has been selected as Kosciusko’s Miss Hospitality, announces a spokesman for the Kosciusko Woman’s League, sponsor of the project with Mrs. Hilda McCandless serving as chairman.

Mayor Emmett Carr remarked, “The people have spoken,” as last returns came in within about 45 minutes after the polls closed Tuesday on the special one-cent city sales tax election. The measure was defeated by a vote of 552 against to 219 for, only 771 of the 1,500 qualified voters expressing an opinion on the matter.

Home owners outnumber renters by a considerable margin in Kosciusko. Some 1,257 local families, approximately 60.8 percent of the total, now own the houses in which they live, setting an all-time record in the city.

At a recent joint meeting of the stockholders and directors of the W.C. Leonard and Company Inc., J.W. Draper and G.D. Carnathan were elected vice presidents of the firm and Mrs. J.W. Long of Jackson and the former Mary Elizabeth Leonard was elected as secretary treasurer of the corporation. Both Draper and Carnathan have been members of he firm since 1945. Mrs. Long is a director and lives in Jackson. She is married to Dr. J.W. Long.

The Consecration of the Church of Saint Matthew was held here last Saturday, June 23, at 3 p.m. The Right Rev. Duncan M. Gray, D.D. Bishop of Mississippi and highest state officer in the Episcopal Church was the Consecrator. The church was full for the principal ceremony with chairs placed on the lawn for an overflow crowd. Carrier of the Cross was Jason Fenwick and Torch Bearers were Guy Carnathan and Grady Zeiss. Officers of the mission are: John D. Guyton, Warden, Sidney Watson, Clerk, and William V. Davis, treasurer. The committee of the mission are Wade Harvey Moore, L. Doty Jackson, and Edward C. Fenwick.

In an effort to support the future leaders of Kosciusko, members of the Kosciusko-Attala Chamber of Commerce and the Industrial Development Committee approved a Leadership Tomorrow program in a meeting Monday night. Serving as chairman is Kenny Bush.

Attala Superintendent of Education James Foster submitted his resignation this week effective July 1. Members of the Attala Board of Supervisors approved the resignation and appointed Foster to serve as superintendent until a newly elected candidate takes office Jan. 1. Foster is eligible to begin retirement July 1 as he has acquired near 40 years in education, military and other state related work.

Gina Griffin, daughter of Danny and Marie Griffin, was picked the AA Queen in the Dixie Youth Baseball League on Tuesday night. She was escorted by Shea Shuler, son of James and Sandra Shuler. Last year’s queen was Misty Chunn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Chunn, and escorted y Ben Aldridge, son of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Aldridge. Forty-three members of Kosciusko civic clubs met in the City Hall Tuesday night. They formed an organization called the Natchez Trace Tourist Attraction Association of the Chamber of Commerce. Jones Woodward was elected president of the new group. He was given the power to pick his associates in the numbers necessary to perform the tasks of the organization. -
The Nation’s Capitol: Ethel High School students see sites in Washington, D.C.
Usually students spend spring break in activities totally foreign to education – not so with a group of Ethel High School students. Although they did not attend classes, ten EHS students feel they furthered their education during the five days of spring break spent in Washington D.C.

When Mary Ellen Scarborough steps across the stage of the Kosciusko High School auditorium to receive her diploma on Friday evening, she will be the third child of Rev. and Mrs. Ben C. Scarborough to finish Kosciusko High with a perfect attendance record. Benjy, who finished KHS in 1959, will be graduating from Mississippi College on June 2. Jack, who finished KHS in 1961, graduated from Holmes Junior College on May 19. All three have been active in student, church, and community affairs and have been honor roll and dean’s list students. -
Relay for Life raises funds
Attala County Relay for Life was held May 10 in the Attala County Coliseum due to threat of rain. The event raised approximately $60,0000. See the photos attached for more about the event.

Pioneer Day:Annual French Camp event provided activities for all ages
The historic district in French Camp, located adjacent to the Natchez Trace Parkway, was transformed into an area reminiscent of olden days.

The Redbud has been named as Kosciusko’s official tree and the rose as the official flower in a recent promotion of the Kosciusko Garden Club. The project was carried out by the garden club in connection with the Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up campaign now in progress. Among other trees suggested were magnolia, dogwood and pine. Running a close race with the rose was the iris, and the dahlia. -

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lacey have received notification from the South America Indian Mission that they have been accepted as missionaries. They have been assigned to the country of Bolivia where the mission has been working since 1926. Lacy is presently serving as the Director of Christian Education in the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko. -
Long Creek holds motivational rally for upcoming state testing
More than 200 students and parents filled the Long Creek Elementary Gym in Sallis on May 2 for a pep rally to energize students for the upcoming state test.

Alice Faye Roberts Leslie, 95 year-old Weatherford, TX resident, made a recent trip to her native Mississippi and visited briefly in Attala and Leake Counties with relatives and reminisced about days of her youth.
