“Keep Attala Forests Green” has been adopted as a slogan by Kosciusko Business and Professional Women’s Club in its sponsorship of a forestry billboard two miles west of Kosciusko on Highway 12. The club is urging more tree farms in Attala as a method of replenishing forests by planting trees. Mrs. Billie Joyce Cameron, president of the Kosciusko B&PW; Club, and Miss Jane Ellen Simmons, Attala’s Queen of the Forest, are promoting the effort.

Mrs. Inez Jenkins Sanders, 48, native of Kosciusko, was elected to serve as Attala County’s tax assessor in her first bid for public office in the August primaries, winning over three opponents.

Appointment of two crew leaders of the 1960 Census of Population and Housing in this area was announced this week. Named to the positions were Scott Landrum and Billy D Comfort, both of Kosciusko. Examinations for Census jobs will be given Saturday morning, March 11, beginning at 9 at the National Guard Armory.

Flower enthusiasts from all over Attala County will gather at the First Baptist Church Chapel next Tuesday, March 15, for the fifth annual “Flower Work Shop” sponsored by the Merchants and Farmers Bank.

Financial assistance for various activities of the senior class of Zama High School was assured by good attendance to the class sponsored entertainment Monday night, Feb. 22, of Carl Sauceman and his band. An evening of music and singing was enjoyed by the large crowd. –Zama news

James C. Turner, 17, a senior at Ethel High School, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Turner of Ethel, has been named a finalist in the 1959-60 competition of the National Merit Scholarship Corp. program and has been awarded a Certificate of Merit.

Attala County moved a step closer to construction of a new Health Department complex Monday as supervisors accepted proposals for land and architectural services. County officials are planning to buy a minimum of two acres of land in the Kosciusko area as Attala’s share of a package put together last year to provide the new building. Most of the construction money will come from a $306,000 grant the county has received from the Community Development Block Grand program. The State Board of Health is putting up another $1200,000 for construction of the new facility.

Ramon Jackson of Kosciusko has been named vice president of The Lewis Grocer Company of Indianola, a subsidiary of Super Value Inc., the world’s largest grocery wholesalers. The 57 year-old grocery executive will continue in his position as director of store development.

Kosciusko police investigated over 600 complaints from citizens during February and issued 97 tickets or arrests, said Chief Bill Cummins in a monthly report of department activities.

Melissa Johnson and Andrea Brooks, students at the Kosciusko-Attala Vo-Tech Center in Kosciusko won achievement awards at the Future Business Leaders of America district leadership conference held at Hinds Junior College.

Kosciusko Skill Center, a division of Holmes Junior College, graduated its first class of home health aides in a ceremony at the Attala County Library Thursday night. Completing the four month course and receiving a certificate were Doris Coffee, Marilyn Hawthorne, Inola Jackson, Lee Lewis, Dorothy McKinney, Margaret Williams, Daisy Winters and Jean Elmore.
