Graduation activities are well underway in schools of the area as all county schools wind up the school year within the next two weeks. At Ethel High School, valedictorian of the class is Margaret Hunt, and Linda Breazeale, salutatorian. At McAdams High School, valedictorian is William Ellington, and salutatorian is Linda Allen. At McCool Grammar School, Cynthia Rainey is valedictorian, and Delores Braswell, salutatorian. Barnes High School, with a tie, has two valedictorians. They are Karleen Bailey and Melba Moore. Linda Bell is salutatorian. At Sallis High School, valedictorian is Jean Carol Aldy and salutatorian is Timmy Gray.

W.M. Adams, principal of the Ethel School System for the past nine years, recently declined a position to accept a long term contract as Guidance Director and Counselor for the Choctaw County School System, which county is his home county.

On Sunday May 6, Faye Cummins, soprano, and Lamar Nesbit Jr., organist, pupils of Ben C. Scarborough will be presented in a joint senior recital at the First Baptist Church of Kosciusko at 3 p.m.

Jack Patterson, owner of Patterson Jewelers of Kosciusko, will proudly open his new jewelry store formally to the public of the Central Mississippi area this weekend. It will be another significant step in a record of steady growth for Patterson, a native Arkansan, who first came to Kosciusko as a watchmaker and repairman for one of Kosciusko’s pioneer jewelers now out of the business.

The medical staff of Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital has requested the board of trustees adopt an optional program to pay “big call” doctors $35 per patient when cared for in the emergency room. Dr. Richard Carter, chief of the medical staff, made the request during an executive session of the hospital board. Thomas Bland, hospital administrator, said the request from the medical staff came as a short term alternative while the doctors are developing a program for weekend emergency room physician coverage using contracted doctors.

The addition of “Affair on the Square” and beautiful weather made the 17th annual Natchez Trace Festival one of the most successful festivals in the history of Kosciusko. Officials estimate over 500 people attended the “Affair” Friday night and Police Chief Bill Cummins said 6,000 to 7,000 people were on the square Saturday.

Unifirst’s Kosciusko office was named this week as the “branch of the quarter” and was presented a plaque noting the recognition. Bank employees are Johnnie Tolleson, Janice Cain, Sharon Ellington, and Martha Kate Lawrence.

A reception was held Sunday from 1-5 p.m. for all the volunteers who help operate the Museum and Information Center located on the Natchez Trace in Kosciusko. Over 90 volunteers and 225 registered visitors attended the reception. It was held to recognize people as part of National Volunteer Week. Helping to greet and serve those attending the reception were Heritage Foundation directors Mr. and Mrs. Bill Stewart, Mary Katherine Patterson, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Potts Jr. and W.C. Shoemaker. Chamber of Commerce director, Willa Sanders, also assisted.

Grace Fellowship Baptist Church announced this week the purchase of the former Ford dealership building on Highway 35 North in Kosciusko, said church pastor the Rev. Joe Blackwell. He said plans call for an auditorium with a seating capacity of 350 people, classrooms, and nursery space for babies and small children.

Three area men were sworn in the past week as troopers of the Mississippi Highway Patrol. The graduates are Joey Barton of French Camp, Robert Teague and Charles M. (Mic) Lawrence of Kosciusko.

The Nation’s Capitol: Ethel High School students see sites in Washington, D.C.
Usually students spend spring break in activities totally foreign to education – not so with a group of Ethel High School students. Although they did not attend classes, ten EHS students feel they furthered their education during the five days of spring break spent in Washington D.C.

May 23, 1963
When Mary Ellen Scarborough steps across the stage of the Kosciusko High School auditorium to receive her diploma on Friday evening, she will be the third child of Rev. and Mrs. Ben C. Scarborough to finish Kosciusko High with a perfect attendance record. Benjy, who finished KHS in 1959, will be graduating from Mississippi College on June 2. Jack, who finished KHS in 1961, graduated from Holmes Junior College on May 19. All three have been active in student, church, and community affairs and have been honor roll and dean’s list students. -
Relay for Life raises funds
Attala County Relay for Life was held May 10 in the Attala County Coliseum due to threat of rain. The event raised approximately $60,0000. See the photos attached for more about the event.

Pioneer Day:Annual French Camp event provided activities for all ages
The historic district in French Camp, located adjacent to the Natchez Trace Parkway, was transformed into an area reminiscent of olden days.

May 16, 1963
The Redbud has been named as Kosciusko’s official tree and the rose as the official flower in a recent promotion of the Kosciusko Garden Club. The project was carried out by the garden club in connection with the Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up campaign now in progress. Among other trees suggested were magnolia, dogwood and pine. Running a close race with the rose was the iris, and the dahlia. -

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lacey have received notification from the South America Indian Mission that they have been accepted as missionaries. They have been assigned to the country of Bolivia where the mission has been working since 1926. Lacy is presently serving as the Director of Christian Education in the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko. -
Long Creek holds motivational rally for upcoming state testing
More than 200 students and parents filled the Long Creek Elementary Gym in Sallis on May 2 for a pep rally to energize students for the upcoming state test.

Area native remembers her days as Senate page
Alice Faye Roberts Leslie, 95 year-old Weatherford, TX resident, made a recent trip to her native Mississippi and visited briefly in Attala and Leake Counties with relatives and reminisced about days of her youth.
