John Miller, 17, and Ethel Johnson, also 17, seniors in Kosciusko High School, were elected as Mr. and Miss Kosciusko High School in the annual Who’s Who contest sponsored by the Student Council, according to a spokesman for the council.

Kosciusko has been presented its third merit community award in the state merit program sponsored by the Mississippi Economic Council, with Lyle Carroll, head of the state program making the announcement that Kosciusko had qualified in the field of education and awarding the plaque to Dr. W.E. Riecken, chairman of the Kosciusko-Attala Chamber of Commerce’s merit community program. Other awards received by Kosciusko are in the categories of municipal financing and recreation. Working closely with Dr. Riecken were Supt. James T. Coleman, Mayor Emmett Carr, and Hubert Davidson, chairman of education committee of Chamber of Commerce.

Bobby Atwood, Ralph Rone, Ernest Flint Jr. and Bobby Bell are attending a four day trip to the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago. The trip was awarded as a project of the Central Mississippi Aberdeen-Angus Association.

The Garan Inc. contract with Attala County has been signed by both county and company officials and is now in the process of being approved by the Agricultural and Industrial Board State of Mississippi. A special countywide BAWI bond issue election will be called around Jan. 15 to vote on a $400,000 industrial bond issue.

Plans are taking shape here for a gala Christmas parade on Monday, Dec. 3, at 6 p.m. with bands, pretty girls, beautifully decorated floats, marching units and other groups to highlight the procession. A total of 37 units have notified the Chamber of Commerce office that they would participate in the procession that will officially open the season in this area.

Sheriff-elect Troy D. Steed of Attala County, and Mike Hutchinson of Choctaw County attended a recent two-day seminar held at the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics headquarters in Jackson.

James C. Foster, who is retiring on Dec. 31 after serving as Attala County Superintendent of Education for the past 16 years was honored at a Sunday afternoon program of tributes and a reception at McAdams High School.

A delegation from Attala County visited the Buchanan, MI. home of Jack-Post Corp last Wednesday. Jack-Post owners bought the Sheller-Globe building in Kosciusko and plan to put it into operation making patio furniture late this winter. Making the trip were Mims Boswell Sr., Jesse Fleming, David Jones, Freddie George, and Hugh Potts Jr. John Bycraft and Charlie Pomeroy own Jack-Post, and Ed Rice manages the Michigan plant. He will move to Kosciusko next summer.

Mrs. Ethel Wright Mohamed of Belzoni, who has been acclaimed as the nation’s finest stitchery artist, was a guest at the Thursday afternoon meeting of the Book Lovers Club.

Jewel Harden and the 20 volunteers at Kosciusko’s Helping Hands Ministries have tried this year to make the day special for at least 50 families in the Kosciusko area by sending out food and clothing. Although the ministries won’t officially open until Dec. 3, the volunteers have been passing out boxes of food and stacks of clothing from the garage at Grace Fellowship since the summer.
