KOSCIUSKO —  July 22 and Aug. 2, 1962

Mrs. Miriam Brantley of Brantley’s Super Market along with her daughters Carolyn Ann and Billie Miriam attended the Malone and Hyde Christmas fair in Memphis. They have just returned from a Christmas buying tour and will be ready for Santa Claus when the time comes.



Social Security, old age, survivors, and disability insurance benefits are becoming more and more important as a community resource. As of Dec. 31, 1961 426 people in Attala County were receiving $105,933 per month or $1,271,196 per year. The average monthly social security benefit nationally at the end of December 1961 was $74.04 for a retired worker. In the State of Mississippi the average was $57.84.



Bill Roberts of Roberts Hardware and Supply Company has made announcement of the new store to be opened on the east side of the square in the building formerly occupied by TWL Store. The business will operate under the name of Bill’s Hardware, on a cash and carry basis dealing in hardware, sporting goods, plumbing and electrical supplies and building materials. Roberts stated that the new store will be an addition and will not in any way conflict with the operation of the present Roberts Hardware and Supply Company located on South Madison Street.



J.W. Riley was elected Ethel’s new mayor in a special election held there Tuesday to fill the unexpired term of George Bridges who died a few months ago. Also in the mayor’s race was Charlie Tipton. There were no candidates for Marshal to fill the unexpired term of W.W. Parks who resigned, but J.R. Dodd was written in by the voters to fill the post.



The Williamsville Baptist Church of Attala Association will observe its 50th anniversary on Sunday, Aug. 5, with special services commemorating the event. A goal of 155 has been set for the Sunday School. If reached this will break all previous records.



Mr. and Mrs. Ewell Moore of Kosciusko are announcing the engagement and approaching marriage of their only daughter, Janice, to Jack Ellington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allie Ellington of Thomastown.

W.C. Stewart and Billy Mitchell, representing the Kosciusko Heritage Foundation, met with officials from the Kosciusko Water and Light Commission Monday night seeking assistance for the Museum and Information Center located on the Natchez Trace Parkway. The two requested the commission members consider donating electrical service to the Center, which was built and is maintained through funds from the non-profit organization.



Construction workers swarmed the old elementary school building on the Ethel High School campus this week as a $79,000 summer renovation project was underway. The work at Ethel includes building a new gymnasium floor in the high school gym and adding a new roof and building improved restroom facilities and a janitor’s closet in the old elementary building. Malvaney Associates architects and planners in Jackson was hired by the board in the spring to do the architectural work for the projects and Ralph McKnight and Son Construction of Kosciusko was hired for the construction work.



Kosciusko School Board members have voted to apply for funding and adopting the state’s Public Health School Nurse Intervention Project.



Over 170 Attala County athletes made their way to Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital Tuesday afternoon for athletic physicals. The hospital and staff members set aside one day each year to give physicals to hopeful athletes for the upcoming season. Last year the hospital did 208 total.



The 8th annual Heart O’Dixie Triathlon, sponsored by the Philadelphia Sertoma Club, came off on schedule Saturday with some 410 participants braving the three facets of the event. Four Kosciusko athletes were among the group. They are Gerald McCaffery, Johnny Boswell, Ben McCaffery and Pat Golding.

    The Redbud has been named as Kosciusko’s official tree and the rose as the official flower in a recent promotion of the Kosciusko Garden Club. The project was carried out by the garden club in connection with the Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up campaign now in progress. Among other trees suggested were magnolia, dogwood and pine. Running a close race with the rose was the iris, and the dahlia.

    Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lacey have received notification from the South America Indian Mission that they have been accepted as missionaries. They have been assigned to the country of Bolivia where the mission has been working since 1926. Lacy is presently serving as the Director of Christian Education in the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko.
