Edwin Triplett, owner and manager of Ben Franklin Store in Kosciusko, has accepted the chairmanship of the 1963 Chamber of Commerce membership committee.

Groundbreaking is underway at Central Mississippi Fairgrounds here to prepare the site for a new and modern building which is expected to be of great promotional value for this section in many areas of interest. The new building is to be erected at a cost of $35,000.

One of the prettiest places in Kosciusko during the Christmas season is St. Therese’s Catholic Center on Bell Street, which will hold open house Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 17 and 18 between the ours f 5 and 8:30 p.m. with Father Joachim Benson, pastor of St. Therese’s Catholic Church, extending an invitation to Kosciuskoans and persons of the surrounding area to attend the open house. The spacious auditorium of the Center, to which has been added many attractive Danish furnishings, has been decorated with an array of Christmas symbols and novelties until it is a veritable Yule fairyland. Lighting effects and Christmas music from a stereo are added attractions.

A bitter cold morning greeted Attalans Wednesday with the coldest weather of the season recorded Tuesday night with the winter season still over a week away officially. Cold, arctic air spread across the country from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. Mississippi’s coldest weather since last January’s freeze was recorded Tuesday night with a low of 7 degrees.

In the recent Christmas parade, little girls baseball was featured by the Kosy Exchange Club. On the float were Sherrie Roby, Regina Pollard, Judy Scarborough, and Brenda Barnette. Exchange Club sponsors baseball for the young girls of Kosy each summer as one of their civic projects.

The Kosciusko Kiddies Club was beautifully represented in the Christmas parade with white and red float that depicted “Christmas Around the World.” They were represented by Marinda Torrance, Bubba Torrance, Lady Ann Stone, Lark Stone, Ronnie Chandler, Steven Chandler, Leslie Goss, Sonny Simmons, Bruce White, and Channing Witzel.

Notification has been received here by The Star-Herald and Mayor Emmett Carr from Congressman Thomas G. Abernethy and Senator John Stennis that the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has approved a grant of $38,400 to the city of Kosciusko for part of the cost on constructing two waste stabilization ponds and outfall sewers.

Preston Hughes and Helpers of Public Education President Scott Wiggers met with city school board members Tuesday night to propose a volunteer tutor program in the city schools, which they said may help decrease the high drop out rate (50 percent) in the Kosciusko schools.

Kosciusko Jaycees are in the process of collecting and cleaning used toys to be distributed to needy children at Christmas. Kenny Malone, chairman of the project, said after the toys are reconditioned they will be given to Helping Hands Ministries for the distribution.

Former NBA star Spencer Haywood and Interstate Industries president Ron Zadroga talked about a possible new industry for the Kosciusko area in a meeting Tuesday. Haywood is connected with the Ford Motor Company and was in Kosciusko looking over the situation.

The fifth annual Trees of Christmas attracted approximately 550 visitors to the Attala County Library Sunday afternoon. Twelve decorated Christmas trees provided by various clubs were placed throughout the library with each depicting a specific theme.

The Redbud has been named as Kosciusko’s official tree and the rose as the official flower in a recent promotion of the Kosciusko Garden Club. The project was carried out by the garden club in connection with the Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up campaign now in progress. Among other trees suggested were magnolia, dogwood and pine. Running a close race with the rose was the iris, and the dahlia. -

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lacey have received notification from the South America Indian Mission that they have been accepted as missionaries. They have been assigned to the country of Bolivia where the mission has been working since 1926. Lacy is presently serving as the Director of Christian Education in the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko. -
Long Creek holds motivational rally for upcoming state testing
More than 200 students and parents filled the Long Creek Elementary Gym in Sallis on May 2 for a pep rally to energize students for the upcoming state test.

Alice Faye Roberts Leslie, 95 year-old Weatherford, TX resident, made a recent trip to her native Mississippi and visited briefly in Attala and Leake Counties with relatives and reminisced about days of her youth.

Dale McBride will be the new coach for McAdams High School for the coming 1963-64 season. He will replace Charles Porter who is leaving to accept the head coaching job at Noxapater, it was announced by Glen Cain, Superintendent of McAdams School. -
