New officers have been elected for United Givers Fund organization of Attala County. Heading he organization is James D. (Buster) Oliver, representative of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of Kosciusko. Other officers are Ed Reese, service man for Mississippi Valley Gas Company, vice president, and John D. Reeves, cashier of Attala National Bank, treasurer.

Spring football practice got underway this week at Kosciusko High School with a total of 60 prospects turning out Wednesday for drills in preparation for the 1963 season. Head Coach Larry Thomas will have 13 returning lettermen from last year’s team, and 13 boys coming up from Junior High, plus some older boys who will be seniors next year. Returning are quarterback lettermen, Richard Jordan and Dolan Self, also both halfbacks, Ronnie Page and Robert Wright. Other lettermen returning are Jimmy Henry, end; Bobby Owens, center; tackles Jim Gallaspy and Hal Dean. Dean made the All-Choctaw Conference squad last year. Among younger boys lettering was Larry King, full back.

The Attala County Board of Supervisors is advertising for bids for $400,000 in industrial bonds to finance construction of building for Garan, Inc. Building site adjoins the old Aponaug air strip which was purchased by the City of Kosciusko, as an industrial park.

Casey Pullen, Kosciusko’s Fire Chief announces the beginning of a First Aid class to be conducted at the Kosciusko Fire Department beginning Friday night, Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. The classes will be conducted by Patrolman T.G. Sadler.

The Book Lovers Club of Kosciusko will celebrate its 33rd birthday Thursday with a party in the fellowship hall of First Methodist Church honoring three Kosciusko clubs that have been organized by its members: Cosmopolitan Club, Woman’s League and New Book Lovers Club.

Wesley Kuykendall of Sallis was in Shrock on Monday of last week to tell us of a meeting to be held in Sallis in regard to phones being installed. Due to a snow on the ground it was impossible for Shrock to attend but we hope and pray that Shrock will soon get phones.—Shrock News by Mrs. Joe Shrock

Two new candidates have entered a special Kosciusko alderman’s race and a third is considering the possibility of joining the campaign. Latest to say they are candidates are Bob Patrick and Danny Tucker. W.C. Stewart is said to be considering the race.

Raymond Dowdle, general manager of Bill Jones Motors in Kosciusko, received the keys to the first of what Companion Vans officials hope will be a long line of GMC vans from Companion sales representative Jim Cananna. Companion officials recently signed a “bailment pool” contract with General Motors whereby the Kosciusko firm receives vans directly from GM. Companion customizes factory vans for sales in several states. Manufacturing operations are in Kosciusko and McGregor, Texas.

Misty Branning, Stephanie Frazier, piano students of Miss Eleanor Guyton, and Douglas Comfort, pupil of Mrs. Earl Regan, participated in the annual Bach Festival at Hinds Junior College in Raymond. Stephanie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Frazier, and Douglas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Comfort Jr., played in the honors recital.

The Back Pew – Gifts and Antiques officially opened in November. The Back Pew is a project of the Kosciusko-Attala Cultural Center and its purpose is to help finance the Cultural Center and Museum.

Certificates of appreciation and longevity awards were recently presented at the Attala Nursing Center. Ten years: Effie Chestnut, Hattie Murray, Suzanne Simmons, and Elnora Veasy; five years: Janet Wilson, Willie Wise, Doris Farrell, Lessie Flanagan, Helen Hawkins, Ruby Haynes, Mary Spears, and Peggy Watson; three years: Dorothy Anderson, Debra Long, Dorothy Stanley, Catherine Collins, Sherbie Rimmer, Sheila Hill, and Linda Burkes.

The Nation’s Capitol: Ethel High School students see sites in Washington, D.C.
Usually students spend spring break in activities totally foreign to education – not so with a group of Ethel High School students. Although they did not attend classes, ten EHS students feel they furthered their education during the five days of spring break spent in Washington D.C.

May 23, 1963
When Mary Ellen Scarborough steps across the stage of the Kosciusko High School auditorium to receive her diploma on Friday evening, she will be the third child of Rev. and Mrs. Ben C. Scarborough to finish Kosciusko High with a perfect attendance record. Benjy, who finished KHS in 1959, will be graduating from Mississippi College on June 2. Jack, who finished KHS in 1961, graduated from Holmes Junior College on May 19. All three have been active in student, church, and community affairs and have been honor roll and dean’s list students. -
Relay for Life raises funds
Attala County Relay for Life was held May 10 in the Attala County Coliseum due to threat of rain. The event raised approximately $60,0000. See the photos attached for more about the event.

Pioneer Day:Annual French Camp event provided activities for all ages
The historic district in French Camp, located adjacent to the Natchez Trace Parkway, was transformed into an area reminiscent of olden days.

May 16, 1963
The Redbud has been named as Kosciusko’s official tree and the rose as the official flower in a recent promotion of the Kosciusko Garden Club. The project was carried out by the garden club in connection with the Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up campaign now in progress. Among other trees suggested were magnolia, dogwood and pine. Running a close race with the rose was the iris, and the dahlia. -

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lacey have received notification from the South America Indian Mission that they have been accepted as missionaries. They have been assigned to the country of Bolivia where the mission has been working since 1926. Lacy is presently serving as the Director of Christian Education in the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko. -
Long Creek holds motivational rally for upcoming state testing
More than 200 students and parents filled the Long Creek Elementary Gym in Sallis on May 2 for a pep rally to energize students for the upcoming state test.

Area native remembers her days as Senate page
Alice Faye Roberts Leslie, 95 year-old Weatherford, TX resident, made a recent trip to her native Mississippi and visited briefly in Attala and Leake Counties with relatives and reminisced about days of her youth.
