Johnnie Poole, former Attala County sheriff and prominent farmer of McAdams, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Attala National bank at the regular meeting of the directors.

Jewell McGinty resigned as Attala County’s home agent last week, effective June 1. She will attend Oklahoma State University at Stillwater, Okla., where she will work on her maser’s degree. She will be succeeded by Mrs. Aileen Boyd. Miss McGinty graced the Attala County scene on August 1, 1951 when she arrived to assist Home Agent Anne Jackson. Miss McGinty became the agent on July 1, 1953.

The Board of Trustees of the Kosciusko Separate School District, in its regular monthly meeting, Friday, May 11, accepted the resignation of William Harry Clarke as band director for the school session of 1962-63. Clarke resigned to accept a position in Nashville, in pursuit of a master’s degree at George Peabody College. John W. McCauley, who is now serving as band director at Crystal Springs High School, was elected to fill the position.

The 1962 commencement exercises at Tipton Street High School will begin with the baccalaureate exercises Sunday at 8 p.m. in the school auditorium. Graduation exercises will be held May 24 beginning at 8. “This will climax the activities of a very successful school year,” said School Principal H.C. Redmond.

Mrs. Henry Coleman, music teacher at Ethel School, presented her four senior pupils, Charlotte Whittington, Linda Breazeale, Geraldine Thrasher and Myra Belk in their music and voice recital at her home in Weir.

Ronnie Armstrong, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Armstrong and Judy Carol Goss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Goss of the Carmack community, received the American Legion award at graduation at Ethel High School.

Mrs. Clyde Doty of Ethel announces the engagement of her daughter, Lema Sue Doty, to Bobby McKnight, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. McKnight of McCool. The wedding will be solemnized June 16 at 3:30 p.m. in the Ethel Baptist Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Fleming of Kosciusko announce the engagement of their daughter, Annie Laurie, to Wiley Clayton Thornton Jr. of Hattiesburg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Clayton Thornton Sr. of Madison. The wedding will take place June 17 at Springdale Baptist Church.

Bonnie, Bobbie and Betty Collins signed scholarships Monday to run track for Ole Miss next spring. The trio was the heart of the Kosciusko Lady Whippet thinclad team this year.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Ellis, known as the Col. Chap Anderson house, has been named to the National Register of Historic Places, bringing to six the number of Attala County homes on the list.

Members of the First United Methodist Church honored the Henry Jones family on Sunday as family of the year. This award, which has recently been re-established, was given in the past as recognition for outstanding service to the church by all family members. Dr. and Mrs. Jones and their children, Sarah, Julie, and Hank are active in all areas of the church.

Last graduates of Carmack School are Marie Winters, Debra Jackson, Betty Hill, Donald Self and Terry Bruce. Attala school board members voted in February to close the school at the end of this school year and assign the 69 students presently attending the school to Greenlee Elementary and Ethel High School.

Attala supervisors agreed to share with the city of Kosciusko the cost of resurfacing he airport’s taxiway. The county’s share is $5,566.15 worth of materials, which will be paid to the city for doing the work using its equipment and personnel.

The Kosciusko Wal-Mart store received a visitor Wednesday morning – Sam Walton, the founder of the Bentonville, Ark, based store chain. Walton said he last visited the Kosciusko store about six years ago. He flew himself to the Kosciusko-Attala airport as part of a tour of stores. He was in Greenville earlier, he said. Among employees visiting with him during a break were Debbie Upton, Carolyn Lewis, Kinda Keith, Willene Burt, Jennifer Landfair, Annette Barksdale and Nina Threet.

Newly elected officers of the Ethel High School student council for next school year are Angie Simmons, president; Christie Brunt, vice president; Karen Knight, secretary-treasurer.

The Redbud has been named as Kosciusko’s official tree and the rose as the official flower in a recent promotion of the Kosciusko Garden Club. The project was carried out by the garden club in connection with the Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up campaign now in progress. Among other trees suggested were magnolia, dogwood and pine. Running a close race with the rose was the iris, and the dahlia. -

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lacey have received notification from the South America Indian Mission that they have been accepted as missionaries. They have been assigned to the country of Bolivia where the mission has been working since 1926. Lacy is presently serving as the Director of Christian Education in the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko. -
Long Creek holds motivational rally for upcoming state testing
More than 200 students and parents filled the Long Creek Elementary Gym in Sallis on May 2 for a pep rally to energize students for the upcoming state test.

Alice Faye Roberts Leslie, 95 year-old Weatherford, TX resident, made a recent trip to her native Mississippi and visited briefly in Attala and Leake Counties with relatives and reminisced about days of her youth.

Dale McBride will be the new coach for McAdams High School for the coming 1963-64 season. He will replace Charles Porter who is leaving to accept the head coaching job at Noxapater, it was announced by Glen Cain, Superintendent of McAdams School. -
