Leading the cheers for Coach Sawyer’s West Side Colts in the annual game with East Side, sponsored by Band Boosters Club, will be Beverly Odom, Frances Briscoe, Kathy Kerr, Adrienne Allen, Dana Graham and Nancy Bolt. Coach Kenneth Quinn’s East Side Giants should be inspired by the young ladies who’ll be leading the cheering in their game against West Side on Landrum Field. They are Lina Cook, Patricia Stewart, Marsha Thompson, Brenda Jamison, Mary Anne Joseph, Laura Lewis, Cynthia Coleman, Susan Rhoades, Debra Parker, Fran Fowler, Lynn Renfroe, and Mary Alice Hammond.

Improvements are underway in the “downtown” area including the leveling of an old garage building and small house across from the Attala County jail by the owner, Mrs. J.E. Landrum. The property has been rented by Jordan Chevrolet Company, reportedly for a parking lot, and will be used in connection with the filling station the company also owns on the corner.

A gay Halloween event is being planned by the Kosciusko Jaycees for Tuesday night at the pavilion in Jason Niles Park, according to George Wade and Eugene Barfield, co-chairmen of the party. Prizes will be awarded for best costume worn by a woman, and for best costume worn by a man. A hamburger supper will be served with J.D. Oliver, J.C. McDonald and Eugene Barfield in charge of arrangements.

Friday night was homecoming night at McAdams High School. Miss Robbie Stewart was selected queen. Her court consisted of Vickie Busbea with her escort Ray Cain. Others were Miss Evelyn Allen and Miss Carol Proctor, Miss Bobbie Allen, Miss Janie Lee McClelland.

Progress is being announced in the annual United Givers campaign now underway in Attala County, with 60 per cent of the $21,500 goal now in sight, according to Dr. John Burge, chairman of the drive.

The Driver Education program, reaching many students of Kosciusko High school, is underway under the direction of Reuben Walker, discloses Supt. James T. Coleman. A new 1963 Plymouth, with dual controls, and all other safety devices, is being furnished for the program by Mid State Motor Company this year. “School officials are proud of the driver education program,” says Supt. Coleman, “and the co-dealerships in providing cars for the training of students in the safe way to drive.”

As Kosciusko businesses opened Saturday morning operators found that four of them had been victims of hard working, if not neat, safe burglars. Raided were safes at Edwards Tire Service, Mid-State Motor co., Attala County Co-operative, and Scarborough Building Supply. Losses, all in cash, were estimated by owners at about $3,000.

Kosciusko businessman J. Marlin Ivey has been initiated into the University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Hall of Fame.

Al Chadick, a recent graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Law, has opened an office at 133 E. Jefferson St.
in Kosciusko. He will be practicing with attorneys Michael H. Steele and Frank H. Shaw.

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Mabry, former Kosciusko residents, are the new owners-operators of Joseph’s Style Shoppe, located on the west side of the court square. Miss Mabry is the former Rose Marie Joseph, daughter of Mrs. J.S. Joseph and the late Mr. Joseph, founders of the women’s wear business. Mabry served as principal of Kosciusko High School from 1968-71. The firm was established by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph in 1938 and has been in continuous operation.

A homecoming court has been selected at Kosciusko High School and queen crowning ceremonies will be held during half time activities at the Kosciusko-Philadelphia football game at Landrum Field Friday night. This is the first time since the late 1960s that a homecoming court has been selected according to school officials. Serving on the homecoming committee are Mrs. Andra Mooney, chairman, Mrs. Sherri Cheek, Mrs. Bobra Woodard, Mrs. Judi Bell, Mrs. Judy Potts, and Mrs. Marie Walker.

The Nation’s Capitol: Ethel High School students see sites in Washington, D.C.
Usually students spend spring break in activities totally foreign to education – not so with a group of Ethel High School students. Although they did not attend classes, ten EHS students feel they furthered their education during the five days of spring break spent in Washington D.C.

May 23, 1963
When Mary Ellen Scarborough steps across the stage of the Kosciusko High School auditorium to receive her diploma on Friday evening, she will be the third child of Rev. and Mrs. Ben C. Scarborough to finish Kosciusko High with a perfect attendance record. Benjy, who finished KHS in 1959, will be graduating from Mississippi College on June 2. Jack, who finished KHS in 1961, graduated from Holmes Junior College on May 19. All three have been active in student, church, and community affairs and have been honor roll and dean’s list students. -
Relay for Life raises funds
Attala County Relay for Life was held May 10 in the Attala County Coliseum due to threat of rain. The event raised approximately $60,0000. See the photos attached for more about the event.

Pioneer Day:Annual French Camp event provided activities for all ages
The historic district in French Camp, located adjacent to the Natchez Trace Parkway, was transformed into an area reminiscent of olden days.

The Redbud has been named as Kosciusko’s official tree and the rose as the official flower in a recent promotion of the Kosciusko Garden Club. The project was carried out by the garden club in connection with the Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up campaign now in progress. Among other trees suggested were magnolia, dogwood and pine. Running a close race with the rose was the iris, and the dahlia. -

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lacey have received notification from the South America Indian Mission that they have been accepted as missionaries. They have been assigned to the country of Bolivia where the mission has been working since 1926. Lacy is presently serving as the Director of Christian Education in the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko. -
Long Creek holds motivational rally for upcoming state testing
More than 200 students and parents filled the Long Creek Elementary Gym in Sallis on May 2 for a pep rally to energize students for the upcoming state test.

Area native remembers her days as Senate page
Alice Faye Roberts Leslie, 95 year-old Weatherford, TX resident, made a recent trip to her native Mississippi and visited briefly in Attala and Leake Counties with relatives and reminisced about days of her youth.
