Members of Explorer Post 45 attended camp at Camp Palila near Louisville last week. Those attending were Larry Nesbit, Hollis Cheek, Kragh Krough, Earl Bryant, Mark Jennings, Joe Collins, Bernard Nowell, Gene Williams, Keith Hall, Charles Prevost, Allen Richardson, Joel Regan, Roger Jamison, Joe Stonestreet, Gary Greer, Kenneth Morris, and Roy Hudson advisor, and assistant advisor, T.O. Krogh. During the week they were instructed in lifesaving, swimming, marksmanship, botany and many other phases of outdoor life.

Mantee Baptist Church was the setting for the marriage of Miss Minnie John Sweatt to Charles Iven Hill on Sunday afternoon, August 5. After August 20 the couple will reside in Jacksonville, Florida, where Mr. Hill is a member of the Orange Park High School faculty and Mrs. Hill will be a senior at Jacksonville University.

In recognition of children heading back to school, merchant members of the Kosciusko-Attala Chamber of commerce will furnish a free treat to the youngsters in the form of a “Back to School” movie party at the Strand Theatre on Aug. 24, discloses Clint Hicks, chairman of the Merchants Promotions committee, and G.D. Carnathan, in charge of publicity. Kicking off the party will be a parade at 8:45 a.m. and the movie will run continuously from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Manager Cleo Boutwell discloses that he can take care of about 2600 children by running four shows from 9 to 5. While the kiddies are happily taken care of at the movies, mothers are urged to select their back to school needs, and shop the attractive selections of clothing and other items, the promotions chairman says.

Pfc. P.D. Hopkins of Rt. 1, French Camp, son of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Hopkins, won the title of “Guardsman of the Month” selected by his platoon for Soldier of the Week and the final selection by all Platoon Sergeants and the First Sergeant.

Gibson’s Discount Center in Kosciusko will be closed effective Saturday, Aug. 22, its personnel were told Wednesday. The store was one of the first to open in Parkway Plaza when the shopping center was built about 20 years ago. It is one of several stores owned by a group headquartered in Laurel. The Kosciusko store has about 14 employees.

Ellis White has retired after 31 years and eight months of postal service. He began his career in Pascagoula and transferred to Kosciusko in 1966 as a clerk-carrier. Since 1975, he has served as carrier on the city’s route four.

The First United Methodist team from Kosciusko won the championship title in the Kosciusko Church Softball League. Members of the team are Bee Hudson, Mark Herndon, John Wiggers, Michael Milner, Mike Ellis, Mark Gressett, Jeff Lacey, Andy Peeler, Mike Nabors, Bennie Lawrence, Darren Milner, Ed Cwiklik, Ricky Ferrell and Ed Brunt.

Dorothy Holmes retired after 22 years as a postal clerk at the Sallis Post Office. She was awarded a certificate from the United States Postal Service this week for her work. Helen Burrell, postmaster, presented the certificate to Mrs. Holmes, whose retirement was effective June 5.

Those attending a meeting of the Lady Landowners League of Attala County were Jeannine May, Helen Knight, Pam Rule, Alice Bethany, Dorlis Cummins, Viginia Weatherly, Virginia Robertson, Barbara Martin, Nina Jenkins, Estelle Ables and Dot Carballo.

The Nation’s Capitol: Ethel High School students see sites in Washington, D.C.
Usually students spend spring break in activities totally foreign to education – not so with a group of Ethel High School students. Although they did not attend classes, ten EHS students feel they furthered their education during the five days of spring break spent in Washington D.C.

May 23, 1963
When Mary Ellen Scarborough steps across the stage of the Kosciusko High School auditorium to receive her diploma on Friday evening, she will be the third child of Rev. and Mrs. Ben C. Scarborough to finish Kosciusko High with a perfect attendance record. Benjy, who finished KHS in 1959, will be graduating from Mississippi College on June 2. Jack, who finished KHS in 1961, graduated from Holmes Junior College on May 19. All three have been active in student, church, and community affairs and have been honor roll and dean’s list students. -
Relay for Life raises funds
Attala County Relay for Life was held May 10 in the Attala County Coliseum due to threat of rain. The event raised approximately $60,0000. See the photos attached for more about the event.

The historic district in French Camp, located adjacent to the Natchez Trace Parkway, was transformed into an area reminiscent of olden days.

May 16, 1963
The Redbud has been named as Kosciusko’s official tree and the rose as the official flower in a recent promotion of the Kosciusko Garden Club. The project was carried out by the garden club in connection with the Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up campaign now in progress. Among other trees suggested were magnolia, dogwood and pine. Running a close race with the rose was the iris, and the dahlia. -

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lacey have received notification from the South America Indian Mission that they have been accepted as missionaries. They have been assigned to the country of Bolivia where the mission has been working since 1926. Lacy is presently serving as the Director of Christian Education in the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko. -
Long Creek holds motivational rally for upcoming state testing
More than 200 students and parents filled the Long Creek Elementary Gym in Sallis on May 2 for a pep rally to energize students for the upcoming state test.

Area native remembers her days as Senate page
Alice Faye Roberts Leslie, 95 year-old Weatherford, TX resident, made a recent trip to her native Mississippi and visited briefly in Attala and Leake Counties with relatives and reminisced about days of her youth.
