KOSCIUSKO — March 3, 1963

The seniors of Ethel High School will present their annual play “Betty Jane from Punkin Lane” at 7:30 p.m. March 8 in the school auditorium. Members of the cast are Johnny Adams, Tenna Frazier, Tene Jones, Fred Brown, Phyllis Hunt, Jaynie Prevost, Lamar McDaniel, Anita Thompson, Gloria Kyle, Morris May, Jimmy Hodge, and Ann Hunt.



The Attala National Bank will build a drive-in branch on Highway 12E, it was announced today by Jim Clark, executive vice president. It will occupy the space now held by Bush Atwood’s used car lot and in addition they have purchased the property to the east, formerly Ewart’s Lumber Co. and later Fowler’s Grocery.



Work got underway this week on the new building to be known as the Williamsville Community Center, located on a site donated by Hugh Joplin, Williamsville ginner. The chartered, non-profit organization is the result of a community-wide dream, and will fill a long-felt need. Sponsor of the project is the Williamsville Home Demonstration Club, whose members started fund raising activities more than a year ago to raise money for the building. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held with members of the sponsoring club and others taking part. They were Doris Parkinson, Mrs. Clyde Finklea, Mrs. Grayden Pettit, Mrs. Aileen Boyd, Mrs. Bonnie Boswell, Mrs. A.N. Parkinson, Mrs. Sam Dodd Ray, Mrs. Ann Blailock and Chester Peninger joined them for the ceremony.



Congratulations to Judy Leonard, Linda Grice, and Troy Hodges for doing a good part in the junior play at Vaiden last Friday night. They were from Carmack and then went to Vaiden after finishing grammar school at Carmack.



At the recent Father-Daughter banquet sponsored by the local Girl Scout organization, the flag ceremony was presented by Sally Hardison, Mary Alice Hammond, Etta Bolt and Cynthia Coleman.



March 19, 1988

Members of the Kosciusko Lions Club presented their1987 Outstanding Citizen Award to Louise A. Bain and heard a late keynote speech from Congressman Trent Lott last Thursday night. Mrs. Bain was nominated for the award by the Attala County Extension-Ethel Homemakers Club.



The Vaiden Courthouse, which has been condemned since 1972, will be the setting for some courtroom scenes in a motion picture based on racism in the south in 1964, said Carroll County supervisors this week.



Merchants & Farmers Bank has announced the promotions of Mark D. Baird and Richard D. Wilson to assistant vice president, Carolyn Oxner to manager of the Lena office, and Becky McDaniel to manager of the Weir office. Robert C. Thompson III, auditor at M&F, has become a chartered bank auditor, and also is the recipient of the Chartered Bank Auditor Program’s First Achievement Award.



Pinese Wallace has been named employee of the month at Garan. She is a sewing machine operator and has been with the company since 1970. Recognition of an employee is made each month.



Mrs. Johnnie Tolleson was recently presented an award for outstanding achievement in deposit  acquisition for the Kosciusko Branch of Unifirst.

    The Redbud has been named as Kosciusko’s official tree and the rose as the official flower in a recent promotion of the Kosciusko Garden Club. The project was carried out by the garden club in connection with the Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up campaign now in progress. Among other trees suggested were magnolia, dogwood and pine. Running a close race with the rose was the iris, and the dahlia.

    May 9, 1963
    Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lacey have received notification from the South America Indian Mission that they have been accepted as missionaries. They have been assigned to the country of Bolivia where the mission has been working since 1926. Lacy is presently serving as the Director of Christian Education in the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko.

    Dale McBride will be the new coach for McAdams High School for the coming 1963-64 season. He will replace Charles Porter who is leaving to accept the head coaching job at Noxapater, it was announced by Glen Cain, Superintendent of McAdams School.
