The attendance at the Attala County Crusade for Christ continues to exceed all expectations, according to Dr. John Burge, chairman of the publicity committee. The large canvas cathedral located on the Kosciusko fairgrounds would not hold the crowds present any night thus far, he said.

T.L. (Tommy) Reynolds Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. T.L. Reynolds Sr. of Kosciusko, has been hired by the city of Kosciusko as City Engineer. His father, who is county engineer, will serve as consultant.

Widely scattered showers visited Attala county Tuesday afternoon but too late to be of much help to scorched crops and pastures. The Sugar Creek area reported on by George Wade, assistant county agent, had not received showers by noon but the sky was threatening. Rain for this area would be too late to be of great benefit to the farmers, however, he reported.

Residents of Blackjack Road, lying east of Highway 43 north of Kosciusko, have asked Attala supervisors to widen and pave the approximately one half mile stretch of road. The group presented a petition bearing 33 signatures of landowners in the area at a board meeting held last week.

Kosciusko school board members met with area health officials Tuesday night to discuss the state’s Public Health School Nurse Intervention Project, a program that would place a school nurse in the system to teach health related matters, including family planning and AIDS education, to children whose parents do not object.

W.C. Stewart and Billy Mitchell, representing the Kosciusko Heritage Foundation, met with officials from the Kosciusko Water and Light Commission Monday night seeking assistance for the Museum and Information Center located on the Natchez Trace Parkway. The two requested the commission members consider donating electrical service to the Center, which was built and is maintained through funds from the non-profit organization.

Construction workers swarmed the old elementary school building on the Ethel High School campus this week as a $79,000 summer renovation project was underway. The work at Ethel includes building a new gymnasium floor in the high school gym and adding a new roof and building improved restroom facilities and a janitor’s closet in the old elementary building. Malvaney Associates architects and planners in Jackson was hired by the board in the spring to do the architectural work for the projects and Ralph McKnight and Son Construction of Kosciusko was hired for the construction work.

The Nation’s Capitol: Ethel High School students see sites in Washington, D.C.
Usually students spend spring break in activities totally foreign to education – not so with a group of Ethel High School students. Although they did not attend classes, ten EHS students feel they furthered their education during the five days of spring break spent in Washington D.C.

May 23, 1963
When Mary Ellen Scarborough steps across the stage of the Kosciusko High School auditorium to receive her diploma on Friday evening, she will be the third child of Rev. and Mrs. Ben C. Scarborough to finish Kosciusko High with a perfect attendance record. Benjy, who finished KHS in 1959, will be graduating from Mississippi College on June 2. Jack, who finished KHS in 1961, graduated from Holmes Junior College on May 19. All three have been active in student, church, and community affairs and have been honor roll and dean’s list students. -
Relay for Life raises funds
Attala County Relay for Life was held May 10 in the Attala County Coliseum due to threat of rain. The event raised approximately $60,0000. See the photos attached for more about the event.

Pioneer Day:Annual French Camp event provided activities for all ages
The historic district in French Camp, located adjacent to the Natchez Trace Parkway, was transformed into an area reminiscent of olden days.

May 16, 1963
The Redbud has been named as Kosciusko’s official tree and the rose as the official flower in a recent promotion of the Kosciusko Garden Club. The project was carried out by the garden club in connection with the Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up campaign now in progress. Among other trees suggested were magnolia, dogwood and pine. Running a close race with the rose was the iris, and the dahlia. -

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lacey have received notification from the South America Indian Mission that they have been accepted as missionaries. They have been assigned to the country of Bolivia where the mission has been working since 1926. Lacy is presently serving as the Director of Christian Education in the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko. -
Long Creek holds motivational rally for upcoming state testing
More than 200 students and parents filled the Long Creek Elementary Gym in Sallis on May 2 for a pep rally to energize students for the upcoming state test.

Area native remembers her days as Senate page
Alice Faye Roberts Leslie, 95 year-old Weatherford, TX resident, made a recent trip to her native Mississippi and visited briefly in Attala and Leake Counties with relatives and reminisced about days of her youth.
