KOSCIUSKO — July 12, 1962

Fair committees of the Kosciusko-Attala Chamber of Commerce are busy making plans, following the “kick off” meeting in Vickers cub Room Tuesday, with Billy Mitchell, fair chairman conducting the session. Expected to give the fairgrounds a new look is the proposed $30,000 cattle barn, which will be used to house the stock, also for exhibit purposes and for beef cattle sales. Among other new events being planned is a local horse show and/or a junior rodeo, with Major Hitt as chairman of this event, and Paul Therrell and Hunter Jordan to assist. Also planned is a cutting horse contest, with Bobby Lowe to serve as chairman and Major Hitt to assist.



Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Holloway and Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Maddox were co-hosts at a barbecue held on the C.D. Maddox Farms in Possumneck for horse show exhibitors, Wednesday, July 4. Approximately 70 local and out of town guests attended the feast which has become an annual affair and one of the highlights of the festivities connected with the horse show.



According to Ed Reese, local weatherman, Kosciusko has had 10 straight days with temperatures in the 90s. The hot days began July 1 when a high of 90 was recorded. July 2 had 91, July 3 had 93, July 4 had 93, July 5 had 94 and July 6, the thermometer rose two degrees higher with a recording of 96. Hottest day so far was Monday when the mercury hit the 97 mark.



Superior Coach Corp. of Kosciusko has just received official notification from Government Ordinance officials that they were awarded a contract for 227 bodies of the transit type and 24 right hand driven high  headroom busses, it was announced by C.F. Bushong, plant manager.



Bobby Aldy, former associate of Luke Aldy in Aldy’s Barber Shop, has taken over as manager-owner of the Stop and Shop. The business changed hands Wednesday and Aldy assumed his new duties immediately.



 Bo Reid who will act as principal and assistant superintendent of Kosciusko High School has arrived in Kosciusko and is already busy making plans for a program of studies for the coming school session. He has just completed work on his master’s degree in school administration. He and his wife, and their three year old son Dale are living on South Wells Street.



July 9, 1987

With plans to employ 30 people within one month, and to provide a nearby location for 30 to 40 more people to sell their hardwood timber, Rives and Reynolds Lumber Company Inc. has officially started the operation f its new sawmill, located approximately three miles east of Kosciusko on Highway 12.



The Veterans of Foreign Wars held a fish fry on Independence Day, inviting the area’s best-known politician and a hero from the Vietnam War. Guests at the meeting of the Stonestreet-Rone unit were U.S. Rep. G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery, and Navy Cmdr. Bill  Bailey, who recounted memories of years he spent as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese.



Promising if he’s elected, Mississippi will “never be last place” in any category again, gubernatorial candidate Ray Mabus said during a visit to his hometown of Ackerman last Friday night at a free hamburger dinner and fundraising event.



Mrs. Larry Rea, Mrs. Richard Carter, Mrs. Johnny Boswell and Mrs. Gary Cochran have assumed associate status with the Kosciusko Junior Auxiliary following several years of active membership in the organization.





Kosciusko Dixie Youth AAA players Brent McCurley, Barry Patton, Brent Busbea, Roy Cummins, Chris Pope, Bradley Tyler, Chad Rawson, Bryan Weaver, Chad Mitchell, Jay Jenkins, Chris Pettit, Jay Price, Eric Adams, were selected to represent Kosciusko in post-season action on the all-star team. Coaches are Ray Jenkins, R.J. Adams, and George Patton.
