Spading the first shovel of dirt at the groundbreaking rites for the construction of two elementary schools and auditorium in Kosciusko were Jack Briscoe, chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Kosciusko schools, Lee Watson Jr., Lee Watson of Hamilton, general contractors for all buildings, Supt. James T. Coleman, John L. White, Dr. Lamar Bailey, members of the Board of Trustees, and Carl Parker, representative of W.I. Rosamond and Associates, architect, of Columbus. The go to work order has been issued for the school construction program, with work to be completed in 360 days.

Affiliated with Sunflower Stores, Kosciusko Enterprises is composed of Sunflower Store No. 10 and Sunflower Store No. 11, and the new store which will be the third Sunflower Supermarket established by the firm will be in New Albany.

Roy Terry has been selected to play in the Junior College All American game at Albuquerque, New Mexico on Dec. 12. He is a student at Holmes Junior College and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Terry of Kosciusko. This is his second year at Holmes Junior playing on that team both years.

Presentation of the Dr. Pepper awards to outstanding players of the Kosciusko Whippet team highlighted the annual football banquet held here this week in the high school cafeteria. Trophies were presented to Jack Fenwick, outstanding back of the year, and Paul Cain, best linesman of the year. Presentation was made by Virgil Melohn, high school principal.

Kosciusko Lodge No. 1946 Loyal Order of Moose, received the charter in impressive rites conducted here last Sunday. The ceremony was held at the VFW home with Regional Director J. Oscar Clem of Louisville, Ky., officiating at the institution of the Lodge.

Dec. 6, 1984

In the first week of their 1984 Christmas basket drive, Kosciusko Lions have collected nearly a quarter of the donations needed to make the season a little brighter for 250 Attala County families. Project chairman Richard Greene said $2,500 worth of money or food goods have been contributed toward an overall goal of $8,500.

Central Mississippians who have been wondering where winter was, quit asking on Tuesday. Tuesday temperatures remained in the 30s all day, according to Kosciusko weather observer Ed Reese’s recordings, and wind chill factors drove inhabitants to shelter. The blast was accented by scattered snowflakes that mixed with icy rain during the morning.

Value of the lake at Kosciusko Country Club has been set at $500 per acre for tax purposes, settling a disagreement between club officials and county reappraisers. Reappraisers first set the country club’s lake value at $2,000 per acre. Club officials objected to that and to the value set on the club’s timber land. Supervisors last week agreed to reduce the lake value to $500 on the contention that in its reappraisal standards the state had set no precedents in such cases. Reappraisers set value of the Kosciusko Golf Club at $20,000 per hole, arguing that was the going price of building golf courses in the area. Club officials objected and a staff member from the State Tax Commission i

s due in town to hear their case.

Rev. Dr. L. Edward Gandy, pastor of Kosciusko’ First Baptist Church, has been elected to serve a second term as president of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board.

Dr. John Wade, who has been providing radiology coverage for Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital for three days each week, turned in his resignation, telling the board he has accepted a similar position at a hospital in Vicksburg. At the same meeting, trustees approved hiring radiologist Dr. R. S. Christian of Jackson to provide the service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
