KOSCIUSKO —
Annual Pops Concert, sponsored by the Attala Historical Society, brought a packed audience to the Mary Ricks Thornton Cultural Center Thursday evening with MSgt (Ret) Stacy Chandler, U.S. Army, and Mrs. Chandler, and Col. (Ret) Gus Heilbronner, U.S. Army greeting at the door.
David Blackwell presented a patriotic medley of piano music.
Continuing the patriotic theme, a salute to our Armed Forces – One Nation Under God, was narrated by Robert Autry Jr. Presentation of colors was by Arms Bearers Pvt. Ryan Taylor and SSG David Watson; Color Bearers SFC Roy A. Bell and SPC Steven Sowards; Drummers Sam Cain and Phillip Coffee.
Followed by the audience singing “The Star Spangled Banner,” retired military personnel gave a salute to the Armed Forces. Participants were Army, CW4 Alan Hatten, SGM Kenny Joiner; Navy, MM3 Hardy Mitchell; Coast Guard, Radarman 2nd Class William “Bill” Walker; Air Force, Brig. Gen. (MS) Donny Sims; Marines, Capt. Jack Holmes, Sgt. James Malone; trumpeter, Amanda Ramage. This segment of the program was coordinated by Anne H. Porter.
Tommy Swafford served as emcee.
First to perform were Victoria Paton and Alexandria Paton, playing the harp and violin; Lawrence Routt, vocalist, and Avery Routt, pianist; Gary Cochran, playing banjo and guitar and singing, Bill Walker, guitarist; Shara Roos, vocalist; Chloe Coninger, vocalist; Don Weaver, vocalist.
The program’s entertainment concluded with swing dancers Joe and Rebecca Doty and their friends Philip and Barbara Reeves, Gerald and Sue Pevey entertaining the crowd with several dances.
All performers returned to the stage to sing “God Bless America” with the audience joining in.
Afterwards, lemonade and ice cream were served on the grounds of the cultural center.

May 16, 1963
The Redbud has been named as Kosciusko’s official tree and the rose as the official flower in a recent promotion of the Kosciusko Garden Club. The project was carried out by the garden club in connection with the Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up campaign now in progress. Among other trees suggested were magnolia, dogwood and pine. Running a close race with the rose was the iris, and the dahlia. -

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lacey have received notification from the South America Indian Mission that they have been accepted as missionaries. They have been assigned to the country of Bolivia where the mission has been working since 1926. Lacy is presently serving as the Director of Christian Education in the First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko. -
Long Creek holds motivational rally for upcoming state testing
More than 200 students and parents filled the Long Creek Elementary Gym in Sallis on May 2 for a pep rally to energize students for the upcoming state test.

Alice Faye Roberts Leslie, 95 year-old Weatherford, TX resident, made a recent trip to her native Mississippi and visited briefly in Attala and Leake Counties with relatives and reminisced about days of her youth.

Dale McBride will be the new coach for McAdams High School for the coming 1963-64 season. He will replace Charles Porter who is leaving to accept the head coaching job at Noxapater, it was announced by Glen Cain, Superintendent of McAdams School. -
