Kosciusko Jaycees will sponsor a “Get Out the Vote” campaign Tuesday, using a number of novel and unusual ideas to make sure that Kosciusko citizens do not forget this important occasion. A plane will circle Kosciusko Tuesday at 9 a.m. dropping leaflets on which the information is printed that the Lawrin Company has approved Kosciusko, that the A&I board has approved the Lawrin company, and that it is now up to the Kosciusko voters to express their opinion in the bond election. In charge of the airplane project is W.S. Fowler.

Johnny W. Powell of Sallis, painter for Sullivant and Ramsey Inc. is one of the many workers busy with getting the Aponaug building ready for Kosciusko’s coming industry, the Lawrin Company. The company is scheduled to have all equipment moved in and ready for operation some time before September 1.

Patrice Pickle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Pickle, was crowned Little Boys Queen at the Little Boys field Friday night. Crowning the new queen was Mary Meek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Meek, last year’s queen.

Kosciusko’s newest industry is “The Easy Fishing Company,” with J.R. Henry Jr., Dr. John Burge and Adrian McBeath as members of the firm. Specialty of the firm will be the handling of live minnows packaged in plastic bags and distributed over the state to bait dealers, service stations, and designated stores for sale to fishermen. First delivery of the packaged minnows to points over the state was made this week.

Bonnie Faye Huffman, bride-elect of Charles Poindexter, was honored with a miscellaneous shower at the recreation hall in McCool Saturday. Hostesses were Mrs. Victor Turner, Mrs. Felix Rainey, Mrs. Kirk Godfrey, Mrs. W.M. Blaine, Mrs. Billy Eubanks, Mrs. Marie Goss, Mrs. Laura Braswell and Mrs. Felix Rainey.

Weir High School science teacher Jo Anne Reid said her offer to ride a January space shuttle flight was well worth the trouble even though she did not get the one seat allotted to an educator. Mrs. Reid says she hopes the government will keep her name on the list for some future mission.

Citing an ambitious list of goals for the coming four years, new terms in office began at Kosciusko city hall this week with old faces. All six members of the mayor and board of aldermen won reelection campaigns this spring and began four year terms Tuesday night. Mayor Freddie George was expected to announce a program he and aldermen have agreed to make which ranges from industrial development to water drainage control. George, along with Aldermen James Bayne, Thomas Craft, Jack Jordan, H.L. Myricks and Billy Tolleson took oaths of office from Circuit Court Judge Clarence Morgan Jr.

Debra Wade of McCool has been promoted from reference librarian to your services librarian for the Mid-Mississippi Regional Library. Debbie Shaw has recently joined the library as reference inter-library loan librarian for the region.

Kosciusko and Attala County governments each picked up $20,000 in a settlement this week as a significant issue in a long running legal dispute was settled. Both governments won reimbursement of $1,900 they put up in the late 1960s as contributions toward a now defunct recreational lake on Long Creek, plus $1,000 toward a request for interest over the years.

After all these years: Shady Grove couple blessed to be married 69 years
Hilmon Flint, 98, and his wife, Ora Belle, 92, of the Shady Grove Community of Attala County could well be described as record setters.

A Sunday morning fire that could have been disastrous if discovered just 15 minutes later, according to firemen who stopped the blaze, resulted in considerable water and smoke damage to the Strand Theatre in Kosciusko, located just off the square. -

The 101st Central Mississipp Fair came to a close on Saturday night with rides shutting down at midnight. Throughout the week there were exhibits, a pageant, sports challenge, musical entertainment including the state finals of the Colgate Country Showdown and a livestock show.

Two new members and two promotions are being announced in the personnel of the Attala County Extension Service staff. W.M. Swoope, who has served here about four years as associate county agent, has been promoted to the position of assistant extension animal husbandman at Mississippi State University. -
Rebuilding history: Community raising funds for Hesterville lodge damaged by storm
The tornado which dealt a blow to the area on April 24 left its mark on the historic Palmer Hall in the Hesterville Community. An effort is underway by a group to raise funds for restoring it for use as the meeting place for Bethel Masonic Lodge and the Hesterville Order of Eastern Star (OES) Chapter. It is also used as a voting precinct.

A special election has been set by Kosciusko’s City Election Commissioners for Sept. 27 to fill the position of City Clerk, following the resignation of Miss Victoria Lee Niles, who is serving her third term in the post. If a second primary if needed, it is scheduled Oct. 11. Members of the commission are J. Will Owen, J.W. Crawford and Mrs. Guy B. Barrett. Miss Niles, resignation is effective Sept. 30, which is the end of the fiscal year for city business. She has accepted a position with the new Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital as bookkeeper and accountant, and will assume her duties there about the middle of October. -

Attala County Mental Health Chapter’s application for charter was approved officially by he Board of directors of the Mississippi Association for Mental Health. Roby Coleman as president and Mrs. Ivy Gibson, secretary are the officers of the new chapter. -

The two story home of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Evans makes a striking pose from its hilltop setting in the Carmack Community, several miles from its original location in the Carroll County town of Vaiden.

‘Make a Splash Read:' Hundreds take part in summer reading program at the Attala County Library
The Attala County Library was host in June and July to 373 youngsters who enrolled in the summer reading program following the theme “Make A Splash Read,” according to Charla Chandler, children’s librarian and director of the annual event.
