Only 14 beds were in use at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital in Kosciusko one day last week, setting something of a modern day record for low occupancy. The patient count stood at 26 on Wednesday, still far behind levels for the same month in previous years. There were 52 empty beds on Wednesday. And according to administrator Thomas Bland, it is the wave of the future, not a fluke. Cuts in repayments to hospitals from the federal Medicaid program and changing insurance company policies are behind a slowdown in hospitalization across the nation, Bland said. He added that industry observers expect the situation to continue indefinitely.
