A sizzling 95 was recorded Tuesday by Kosciusko’s weather man for the fourth time in the last two weeks, marking the hottest summer as well as the coldest winter experienced here since 1954. However, the mercury hit 100 in Jackson Tuesday, it was reported, so there are hotter places than Kosciusko.

Cotton Atwood this week announced the association of A.G. Duke as a full partner in the business of Atwood Auto Sales, located on East Jefferson Street, effective July 1.

LuVel-Nehi team members who won first and second half of Little League baseball play are Robert Simpson, jerry Pettit, Dolan Self, Richard Simpson, Joel Regan, Bobby Hamilton, Curtis Kuykendall, Luther Kuykendall, Kenneth Woods, Otho Pettit, Sidney Coleman, John Jennings, Ray Jackson, Bobby Rawson and Bud Lawrence. Coaches are Frank Simpson, Sam Power, and Robert Holmes, manager.

Attala County’s Health Department in conjunction with the misissippi State Board of Health is conducting a waer pollution survey of the Yockanookany River below Kosciusko, arrording to Dr. W.E. Riecken, Attala’s Health officer. Purpose of the survey istodetermine the amount of pollution occurring from the discharge of raw unreated sewage from Kosciusko directly into the stream. This information will be used by the City Planning Commission to determine the emergency of the need for some types of treatment of Kosciusko sewage.

John J. Fischer, president of Lawrin Lamp Co., has said one of the company’s contributions to Kosciusko’s advancement, will be the furnishing of necessary lamps for decorative and lighting purposes at the new and beautiful Montfort Jones Hospital nearing completion here.

The Kosciusko-Attala Chamber of Commerce board has authorized spending up to $40,000 for a new exhibit building at the Central Mississippi Fairgrounds. At the same time, the board has agreed to contribute $2,000 toward development of a park for recreational vehicles at the fairgrounds and to purchase a computer system for the Chamber office for $5,000.

The list o potential candidates to succeed former state Sen. Tommy Brooks rew by one this week as Attala County State Rep. H.S. “Butch” McMillan announced he is running. McMillan is a farmer and accountant who is serving his second term in the state legislature. He had been rumored as a potential candidate since Brooks submitted his resignation early last month.

An “apparently professional” safe cracking job on the vault at Kosciusko High School relieved the school of about $1,000 Thursday night sometime after 11 p.m. It was discovered by J.E. Burns, building custodian, about 6:15 Friday morning when he was unlocking the office for janitors. -

A book review and poster contest were held in conjunction with the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration involving students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12 grade in Attala County Schools.

A majority of the Kosciusko retail merchants who are members of the Chamber of Commerce have indicated their intention of beginning the usual Thursday afternoon closing on Jan. 12. A heavy majority of those polled by the Merchants Subcommittee indicated preference for the same date as was observed last year. -
