Clifton (Cliff) Howard McWhorter, veteran Circuit Clerk of Attala County, beginning his 25th year of public service here and seventh term as circuit clerk, has a record of success at the polls that probably has not been equaled or surpassed by any candidate in the county or state of Mississippi.

DAR Good Citizenship girls selected by the Samuel Hammond Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution are Frances Jenkins of McAdams High School; Barbara Adams of Ackerman High School; Bobbie Steed of Zama High School; Willene Carpenter of Kosciusko High School; Bessie Ruth Duke of French Camp Academy; and Mary Williams of Thomastown High School.

With the filing of the articles of incorporation of the Attala Land and Wood Products Company, Attala County gets a new home-owned industry that will not only employ some of our local citizens but will also provide a market for certain types of timber that formerly were completely without value. The plant will be located on the Youth Center Road adjoining the former Cain’s Lake property, approximately 2.6 miles from the Highway 12 intersection. An office building will be constructed at the plant site. Charles Pope, former Attala County Chancery Clerk, and one of the incorporators of the new company will act as manager at the plant and be on duty at the office during business hours.

One senior at Kosciusko High School has been named a finalist in the 1959-60 competition of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation Program and has been awarded a certificate of merit, according to Principal Virgil Melohn. Ray Burk Jr. has received the certificate which attests to his high academic promise.

Remember Old Main – January 23, 1959, Old Main Dormitory at Mississippi State University burned to the ground in what President Ben Hilbun termed “An awesome spectacle.” Because Old Main was such a campus landmark, the Alumni Association is backing a drive to raise $100,000 to build a “Chapel of Memories” on the campus.

Kosciusko officials said Tuesday night that they will work with county supervisors in a major overhaul of the Airport Commission. That move was requested by commission chairman Hollis Cheek, who contends that the present agency lacks authority to perform even routine maintenance.

Tim Wasson of Kosciusko has been appointed to serve a five year term on the state board of examiners of the Water Plant Operations of Mississippi.

The new Ethel water tank is being reworked this week. Mayor Arliss Ellis said Wednesday the contractor went broke near the end of the project about one year ago. He said the new tank construction was unacceptable from the beginning and water has never been put in it. It will cost the bonding company about $77,000 to complete the project, including work on the old tank. He said the town will get $16,000 in damages for not being able to use the tank.

On Sunday, Mrs. D.S. Hollingsworth (Miss Doxie), widow of Mr. Hollingsworth, former residents of this county, celebrated her 100th birthday. The family met in the home of her daughter, Mr. and Ms. M.C. Anderson of Batesville with whom Mrs. Hollingsworth has lived for a number of years.—McAdams news.

While they are still in the process of assessing the effects of property reappraisal, Attala County officials say they feel certain they did not overshoot millage rates by the extent indicated in a recent taxation report. If it is accurate, Attala County’s total collections of 1984 ad valorem taxes will exceed 1983 income by 26.3 percent. But Tax Assessor-Collector Kempe Hodges said the report is significantly off base largely because it fails to take into account the loss in income to the county from homestead exemptions.

Former Miss America Cheryl Prewitt Blackwood will headline the entertainment during activities of the 15th annual Natchez Trace Festival which will be held on April 27.

Kosciusko High School head football coach and athletic director, David Abercrombie accepted a $100 check from Robert Broach for the first donation to the building of a weight room for the Kosciusko athletic programs. The drive for financing of the weight facility is spearheaded by the Kosciusko Athletic Booster Club of which Broach is a member.

An “apparently professional” safe cracking job on the vault at Kosciusko High School relieved the school of about $1,000 Thursday night sometime after 11 p.m. It was discovered by J.E. Burns, building custodian, about 6:15 Friday morning when he was unlocking the office for janitors. -

Kicking off the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in Kosciusko was the 14th Annual Image Award Banquet on Saturday night with Gloria Cotton, named winner of the “Living Legacy” honor.

A book review and poster contest were held in conjunction with the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration involving students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12 grade in Attala County Schools.

A majority of the Kosciusko retail merchants who are members of the Chamber of Commerce have indicated their intention of beginning the usual Thursday afternoon closing on Jan. 12. A heavy majority of those polled by the Merchants Subcommittee indicated preference for the same date as was observed last year. -
