KOSCIUSKO —
After reading Pat Rice’s letter in last week’s Star-Herald, my first thought was “What can I do to help?” So, I paid Helping Hands a visit.
In 2010, Helping Hands administered to approximately 8,000 families. “Need I tell you” Pat said, “that with today’s economy that the number for 2011 is steadily growing.”
Here is what I experienced first hand. Helping Hands opened at 9 a.m. In three-hours time, 83 families had already passed through their doors asking for help. Before the day passes that number could triple. Christmas is right around the corner.
Having her purse taken with vital information stored in her cell phone, could not have happened at a worse time.
As friends of Helping Hands, some of my friends and I have come up with a project that we are calling - Hands to Work – Hearts to God.
If you would like to do something to help Helping Hands, do so by purchasing a spiritual bracelet for $10. We have several different designs to choose from. We are also offering an assortment of five all-occasion cards for $10. Some designs will be handmade from art work submitted by local artists including children.
On December 15, we are also giving away a handmade fresh water pearl necklace. Donations for a chance to own this lovely multi strand pearl necklace is $2. If you would like to place an order for one of these items – call Helping Hands at 289-7031 and ask for Pat Rice or Marie Harmon.
If there are children out there, who would like to submit a design, bring it to Helping Hands before October 15. A community willing to work together can turn a negative into a positive.

Prayer for the return of sanity
Time and money, Mississippi seems to have it to blow. Since our state has been taken over by Tea Party Republicans nothing has been done in this state to improve the economy. These people have spent our time and our money on issues that are not within the realm of our state government.

To the customers, stockholders of M&F
In 1890 a group of investors saw the necessity for a bank to meet the needs of the people and businesses of Kosciusko and Attala County. Merchants and Farmers Bank was thus established and for 123 years it has met those needs. M&F has fostered a culture of community and caring, always putting people and their needs ahead of corporate gains.
