No need to bring up tragic situation in ad

WEIR — I am writing in response to the advertisement which ran in The Star-Herald dated Nov. 22, 2012, placed by Billy Joe Halderman.

I was somewhat surprised at the method used to influence voters against a candidate for political office. It’s distressing to think anyone would use a tragic situation for everyone connected to it to discredit a former political opponent. A simple endorsement of the candidate of one’s choice would have been in much better taste.

I don’t know where the information contained in the ad was garnered. It clearly has no basis in fact. As for the statement that the shooter went home and told no one, I personally can say I know that is not a fact.

I was present when he came home and walked in the door and said to call the sheriff, he had just shot Eddie Halderman in self defense.

I immediately called the sheriff’s office and made the report, then gave the phone to my husband.

There were four people present at the time this occurred and therefore, no one else can give testament that anything stated in the ad in question bears any resemblance to what actually occurred. It can only be viewed for what it is: an opinion.

The only thing accomplished by this is to stir up pain and hatred that may have been beginning to heal for some. Keeping hate alive only serves the purpose of putting  a blight on the lives of those who carry it with them.

My sympathy and that of my entire family has always been and will always be deep and heartfelt for the family of Mr. Eddie Halderman. We will always carry a heaviness in our hearts for their loss.

I intend no offense to anyone with this letter and want to say thank you for the opportunity to, in some small way, express the sadness evolved when I read this ad and realized the harm that has been done by it.

  • Prayer for the return of sanity

Time and money, Mississippi seems to have it to blow.  Since our state has been taken over by Tea Party Republicans nothing has been done in this state to improve the economy.  These people have spent our time and our money on issues that are not within the realm of our state government.
