Remembering Dr. Holdiness

KOSCIUSKO — I have fond memories of Dr. Gary Holdiness. He was a giant of a man; loved his family, country, his heavenly Father and the people he served.

Dr. Gary was not a typical doctor. He was bubbling over with personality. He did not wear the typical suit and tie that doctors usually do.

I had a great friend that passed away some time ago and was well known to diagnose his own ills. He would tell me that he had an appointment with Dr. Gary and he would spend several days doing research on the computer on his problem at the time and he and Dr. Gary would sit and digest the information; he brought.

I can see the smile on Dr. Holdiness’ face as they exchanged ideas.

Now Dr. Holdiness loved his community and he loved the Natchez Trace Fiddlers Convention and Contest. I am very proud that I was able to work with him and seek his advice along with his wife Donna. He also was an amateur radio operator and he and Johnny Boswell loved their bikes.

Now let me close with this. I was at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital several years ago visiting a patient. As I came down the elevator, there was Dr. Holdiness sitting at the desk with his nursing staff, as all doctors do. He was reviewing their patient cases and giving instructions for the day. I recall the pictures of all the doctors on the wall across from him and asked him if the top one was him.

He laughed and said, “Yes!” I asked him if he had his staff working. He then laughed and said, “I do. When I jump, they jump.”

He then bounced up and down in his chair. And, low and behold, the staff followed suit and jumped up and down in their chairs.

Everyone was laughing and Dr. Holdiness watched me as I walked down the hall with that great smile on his face.

Thanks expressed for support of Burchfield benefit

Texans thankful for Kosciusko kindness
My buddy and I, of 20-plus years of fishing, were returning from a fishing trip in Louisiana. Fishing was grand! It was my turn to pay for fuel.

Prayer for the return of sanity
Time and money, Mississippi seems to have it to blow. Since our state has been taken over by Tea Party Republicans nothing has been done in this state to improve the economy. These people have spent our time and our money on issues that are not within the realm of our state government.

To the customers, stockholders of M&F
In 1890 a group of investors saw the necessity for a bank to meet the needs of the people and businesses of Kosciusko and Attala County. Merchants and Farmers Bank was thus established and for 123 years it has met those needs. M&F has fostered a culture of community and caring, always putting people and their needs ahead of corporate gains.

The Kosciusko School District has been known for its success academically and on the athletic field, but this past week, the students at Kosciusko School District proved they had something greater than intelligence and athletic ablitity.

Thanks for C.A.R.E.ing
On behalf of the Oprah Winfrey Boys and Girls Club, I would like to thank everyone who made the sixth annual C.A.R.E..(Children Are the Reason for Excellence) Banquet a success! We have an extremely hard-working and dedicated board and along with our capable staff and talented club members the evening was enjoyed by over 300 people.
