Prayer for the return of sanity

KOSCIUSKO — Time and money, Mississippi seems to have it to blow. Since our state has been taken over by Tea Party Republicans nothing has been done in this state to improve the economy. These people have spent our time and our money on issues that are not within the realm of our state government.

Recently, the loving governor of Mississippi, Phil Bryant, signed into law a bill, Senate Bill 2633, that allows for student led prayer in school. I assumed the former Ole Miss Law students would point out the redundancy of such legislation if not the possibility of it being found unconstitutional. I am shocked, the current law of the land, said land being the United States of America, allows for student lead religious activities. I assumed we were all aware of such provisions given the prayers that occur before high school football games. I am hoping this bill is nothing more than a crafty attempt “to stick it to the Feds”. Such as raising the Confederate Battle Flag above the Mississippi Supreme Court the day our plan for implementing the ACA was rejected due to lack of support from Governor Phil Bryant. It is better to believe there is logic, although flawed, at work rather than pure ignorance of law and disregard for the time and money of the people of Mississippi.

Given the governor stated his faith in Attorney General Hood’s representation of Mississippi in the event of any lawsuits brought forth because of this bill, I know there is an awareness of money in Jackson. If there was no such awareness then Governor Bryant would have suggested the same law firm hired by the Secretary of State Office to defend the Voter ID law to defend any lawsuits derived from Senate Bill 2633. Having met AG Hood several times, I have faith he will defend well the rights of students to pray to the goddess prior to a football game or to offer up thanks to Allah prior to lunch, or even to pray as did the great Nazarene leader, Jesus.

I pray our elected officials stop their “Hatfield/McCoy” vendetta against the federal government. Creating legislation that oppresses citizens of the United States of America will deplete the coffers of the state in their “Don Quixote” quest to dismantle the federal government. I pray our elected officials in Mississippi use their time in office to improve infrastructure, protect our vast wildlife and rivers, improve public education, and stop their attempts to make this state a theocracy such as Iran.

On behalf of the Oprah Winfrey Boys and Girls Club, I would like to thank everyone who made the sixth annual C.A.R.E..(Children Are the Reason for Excellence) Banquet a success! We have an extremely hard-working and dedicated board and along with our capable staff and talented club members the evening was enjoyed by over 300 people.
