Thanks for C.A.R.E.ing

KOSCIUSKO — On behalf of the Oprah Winfrey Boys and Girls Club, I would like to thank everyone who made the sixth annual C.A.R.E..(Children Are the Reason for Excellence) Banquet a success!  We have an extremely hard-working and dedicated board and along with our capable staff and talented club members the evening was enjoyed by over 300 people.

Our sponsors included Montfort Jones Hospital, Citizens National Bank, Merchants and Farmers Bank, Kosciusko Medical Clinic, Serve Pro, and Xpress Lube and Glass. U.S. Foods and Tyson donated much of the meal that was served.   Tables were purchased by Kosciusko Water and Light, Hawthorne Construction, Tyler King and Ryder, Christian Liberty M.B. Church, Dr. Larry Routt, Alcorn State Alumni, Mr. William Lloyd, First Baptist Church, Myricks Funeral Home, Williams/Greenwood, Prairie Farms, Richard Carter Attorney at Law, Dr. and Mrs. Timothy Alford, Estes Plumbing, Bobcat Organization, Boswell Media, Ameriprise Financial, Katherine Carr Esters, Mrs. Maudie Benton, Merchants and Farmers Bank, Holt’s Body Shop, Wal Mart, NCNW, True Vine M.B. Church, MLK Commemoration Committee, Atwood Personal Care/Panola Paper, and Christian Liberty M.B. Church Youth Group.  Over 100 individual tickets were sold as well.

Merchants and Farmers Bank, Boswell Media, and Leslie Dees of The Star-Herald were recognized for their long-standing commitment to the Boys and Girls Club.  Members of the Holmes Connection entertained along with the Club Childrens’ Inspirational Choir. Dave Condon brought a most inspirational message to those in attendance.  Appreciation is extended to Eric Matthews of Breezy who served as the emcee for the evening.

Wanda’s Catering donated many of the decorations and Deason’s Wholesale provided the beautiful plants.  The Silent Auction, organized by Mary Davidson and Kay Dawson featured items  donated by board members along with jewelry donated by local artist Melissa Myers. Bids began on paintings by Danny Brunt, Dale McLean and Peggy Sims and bidding will continue until November 3.

When Miss Winfrey provided the generous gift of a Boys and Girls Club she did so with the challenge that it receive continued support from our community.

Fortunately, Kosciusko and Attala County have risen to her challenge and over 150 children are nurtured and cared for at the club each day after school participating in various programs including Reading and Science Clubs, Choir, Pathway to the Promise, Common Threads and Chess Club.

Thank you for your support of the Club and its members!

  • Prayer for the return of sanity

Time and money, Mississippi seems to have it to blow.  Since our state has been taken over by Tea Party Republicans nothing has been done in this state to improve the economy.  These people have spent our time and our money on issues that are not within the realm of our state government.

  • To the customers, stockholders of M&F

In 1890 a group of investors saw the necessity for a bank to meet the needs of the people and businesses of Kosciusko and Attala County.  Merchants and Farmers Bank was thus established and for 123 years it has met those needs.  M&F has fostered a culture of community and caring, always putting people and their needs ahead of corporate gains.
