Charter schools sounds like home schooling

KOSCIUSKO — I keep reading that we need to improve educational attainment in Mississippi.

Can someone please explain to me how leaving kids at home alone learning in front of a computer all day accomplishes that? This whole idea of virtual charter schools is beyond me.

Charter schools are already removed from many regulations that regular schools have to follow.

Then on top of that, we’re going to remove them one step further and put them online.

Really? How many kids do you know who are motivated enough to school themselves at home? How many parents have the time or ability to serve as the “parent coach/teacher” that virtual charter schools depend on?

That’s right, they depend on the parent to do the teaching. Sounds like homeschooling to me, and maybe that’s what this is all about – giving homeschoolers a free virtual curriculum, paid for by my tax dollars.

Sorry Legislature, but that won’t cut it. I want my tax dollars spent on real schools, real teachers, and a real education for our kids.

  • Prayer for the return of sanity

Time and money, Mississippi seems to have it to blow.  Since our state has been taken over by Tea Party Republicans nothing has been done in this state to improve the economy.  These people have spent our time and our money on issues that are not within the realm of our state government.

In 1890 a group of investors saw the necessity for a bank to meet the needs of the people and businesses of Kosciusko and Attala County.  Merchants and Farmers Bank was thus established and for 123 years it has met those needs.  M&F has fostered a culture of community and caring, always putting people and their needs ahead of corporate gains.
