Kosy schools raise funds for ill children

KOSCIUSKO — The Kosciusko School District has been known for its success academically and on the athletic field, but this past week, the students at Kosciusko School District proved they had something greater than intelligence and athletic ablitity. Our students proved they had compassion and a special place in their hearts for children who are less fortunate than they are. I would like to thank Dr. Tony McGee for allowing our school district to partner with Catch-A-Dream Foundation during the week of September 10-14.

During the week, our five schools competed to see which class could raise the most money to help provide “dream” trips for terminally ill children. Going into the week, I was hoping to raies enough money to sponsor one child’s trip.

I never expected the final total that I saw when all the money had been counted. We were able to raise $18,226.95 in a five-day period, which is truly amazing. This money will allow four terminally ill children the opportunity to experience their dream trips.

During those five days, I heard heartwarming stories from parents about their children dumping their piggy banks in their class buckets, putting their wants aside, and searching for money for kids they deemed to be “more deserving than they were.”

This could not have been done without the help of hardworking principals, teachers, parents and the Kosciusko community at-large. I would also like to give a special thanks to the ladies at M&F Bank who tirelessly counted and sorted ALL of the money we collected. Although it was hard work for them, they eagerly counted it to see which group was on top each day.

Something that started out as a simply change drive ended up taking on a whole new indentity. The attitude and culture of our schools and community can be changed for the best if more pepole would follow the example set by these children. We started as a few pennies being dropped in a class’s bucket ended up being the fulfillment of dreams for four terminally ill children. Catch-A-Dream is about hope, and I am glad to say I dream with young men and women on a daily basis who helped provide hope for the hopeless.

Although only one class could win the overall prize, the true winners were the children and their families that will be changed forever.

Thanks expressed for support of Burchfield benefit
Doty Springs Baptist Church would like to express our sincere gratitude to all who helped with the recent Wayne Burchfield benefit. Proceeds will go toward the medical expenses of Mr. Burchfield, who is a stroke victim.

My buddy and I, of 20-plus years of fishing, were returning from a fishing trip in Louisiana. Fishing was grand! It was my turn to pay for fuel.

Prayer for the return of sanity
Time and money, Mississippi seems to have it to blow. Since our state has been taken over by Tea Party Republicans nothing has been done in this state to improve the economy. These people have spent our time and our money on issues that are not within the realm of our state government.

To the customers, stockholders of M&F
In 1890 a group of investors saw the necessity for a bank to meet the needs of the people and businesses of Kosciusko and Attala County. Merchants and Farmers Bank was thus established and for 123 years it has met those needs. M&F has fostered a culture of community and caring, always putting people and their needs ahead of corporate gains.

Thanks for C.A.R.E.ing
On behalf of the Oprah Winfrey Boys and Girls Club, I would like to thank everyone who made the sixth annual C.A.R.E..(Children Are the Reason for Excellence) Banquet a success! We have an extremely hard-working and dedicated board and along with our capable staff and talented club members the evening was enjoyed by over 300 people.
