In the Jan. 21 edition of The Star-Herald, an article stated that Jerrelyn Jackson was the first female principal of Kosciusko High School. This is not correct.

There were two female principals of KHS in the 20th century: Pearl Guyton and Rosa Clower. Guyton served as principal during the 1920s and early 1930s; Clower followed her and retired in 1948.

Prior to her marriage, my mother, Corinne Hammond Hughes, taught four years of Latin, two years of French and tutored students wishing to learn German at KHS. Guyton was principal then.

This information in no way detracts from Jackson’s accomplishments. She was the first female African-American principal.

Gray Ellis was principal of the Kosciusko Grammar School (grades 1-4) at the same time that Clower was principal of KHS.

There are very few people living today who remember when Guyton was high school principal. In contrast, there are many people living today who remember Clower and her years of service at KHS.

Both Guyton and Clower were outstanding administrators in a school system long recognized for its excellence.

Searching for info on George Christopher Pee
Some time ago I began to retrace my ancestors and discovered I am a great-great-grandson of George Christopher Pee. He was a first sergeant in the 4th Mississippi Infantry Co. B. He fought in the Civil War at the Battle of Fort Donoldson, was captured and went to Camp Morton in Indiana as a prisoner of war.
