Mayor invites supervisors to alliance meeting

KOSCIUSKO — Kosciusko Mayor Jimmy Cockroft formally invited the Attala County Board of Supervisors to a meeting with their counterparts from Louisville/Winston County, Philadelphia/Neshoba County and Carthage/Leake County.

During the county board meeting Monday, Cockroft said the Four Corners alliance for economic development was still in the planning stage.

“It’s a work in progress,” Cockroft said. “We are checking to see if there is any support.”

Supervisors board president Kary Ellington said that these alliances have been productive elsewhere in the state.

“We’ve got to come together in order to succeed,” Ellington said.

He added that if  residents from any of the four areas had to drive 25 miles for employment, it would be a winning situation because money would be put back into the area.

Cockroft said most of these alliances have started around an economic project but right now their group does not have one.

VA office

Concerned resident Wendy Walters addressed the board about the Veterans Affairs officer again.

Walters said she was concerned about his participation in special and community events while being “on the clock.”

Supervisor Troy Hodges said he has been on the board for 25 years and he’s never heard a complaint about the veteran services officer.

Walters said she was concerned because she didn’t know how much activity was going on out there.

The supervisors agreed that hours needed to be set for the office.

The VA office is staffed with two part-time employees and hours are usually set.

The board approved:

– Travel for the justice court clerk to Jackson November 15-16

– Appoint special prosecutor for justice court due to three defendants in the same case being related

–  School bus turnaround for Wimpy Winters

–  16th Section hunting and fishing lease for Multonough Springs Hunting Club
