Holmes County News: Illegal alien taken by agents for deportation

KOSCIUSKO — Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents were called to Holmes County Tuesday Aug. 10 after an alleged Carthage man was stopped by police.

Enrique Hernandez, 37, was pulled over on Mississippi State Highway 12 by Durant Police Monday, Aug. 9, on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Hernandez was found to have no ID, license or insurance with him.

After police officials contacted ICE, agents conducted an interview on Hernandez and determined he was an illegal alien.

Hernandez had given a Carthage address to police. He was picked up by ICE Wednesday, Aug. 11, for a deportation hearing back to Mexico, according to Durant Police Chief Jerry Bankhead.

In other arrests, Christopher Mungon, 19, of Durant was arrested Tuesday, July 13, for felony breaking and entering of an automobile and two counts of identity theft.

Mungon allegedly broke into a vehicle on South Lexington Street in Durant and took credit cards from the vehicle.

No bond was set for Mungon since he has been indicted for other felonies including auto theft, possession of stolen property and felony fleeing, according to police officials.

Arthur L. Sumerall, 41, of Durant, was arrested Sunday, Aug 1, at 2:55 a.m. for felony DUI third offense and careless driving.

Sumerall's bond was set at $1,220, according to the jail docket.

James T. Melton, 44, of Durant, was arrested Saturday July 31, at 4:40 p.m. for felony DUI failure to obey a traffic control device and no driver's license.

Melton's Bond was set at $1,440, according to the jail docket.

Bell's Pharmacy of Durant reported items stolen from its store on Friday, July 30.

Candy, jewelry, cologne and pharmaceutical drugs were reported taken.

On Tuesday, Aug. 10, Bell's reported an attempted burglary after discovering the back door of the building had been tampered with, according to officials.

Police are investigating the incident and do have a person of interest in the case.

If anyone has information about the incident they are asked to call the Durant Police Department at 662-653-6846, all calls will be kept confidential.
