KOSCIUSKO —
Lucky Penney is appropriately named and shows few indications of having been abused. She has her very private corner of the pasture at DGR Stables at Diamond Grace Ranch on Highway 35, south of Kosciusko. Her lucky status came about after being rescued in an abusive condition by ranch owner Shari Schroeder.
There’s other horses and dogs on the ranch that could also bear the name of Lucky as they have also had the good fortune of being recipients of Shari’s compassion.
Lucky Penney’s coming to the ranch was the result of a resident of the community who knew the fate that had befallen the horse. Knowing of Shari’s love of animals she told her of the situation. The healing of the badly abused horse began.
According to Shari, the horse’s leg had been tied to its head and dragged behind a pickup. A resident of the community saw the deplorable act and gave his pickup in exchange for the badly injured horse. He and a neighbor in turn made contact with Shari.
“When I got her she had bad rope burns and one whole side had road rash with bits of the blacktop stuck in her skin,” she said. She built a pen for her and after a veterinarian’s visit and with his instruction, she began the process of doctoring her and six weeks later she has few signs of the misfortune which came her way.
In another pasture, four ponies graze and can also attest to their owner’s love and gentle care. They were taken from the pasture of a relative. “All the grass had been eaten, so I brought them to my pasture,” she said. Now the four ponies, one at age 20, provide rides for youngsters who come to visit at the stables.
Shari is anxious to share her ponies and will host parties for children and give rides. The stables are also available and on occasion she offers them for short time boarders. With the approach of Hurricane Isaac last week, she was prepared to offer her facilities to animals having to be evacuated from their pastures. “I plan to contact the Red Cross and be ready to offer my stables in the event of another hurricane,” she said.
And by the way, Lucky Penny is available for adoption, she said.
Although Shari and her mother have been living at the Highway 35 location several years, moving here after living in Chicago and South Carolina, she is no stranger to the area. She has relatives living in Carthage and has made visits to the area throughout her growing up years.
