McAdams head football coach Ras Bayles has an unpleasant surprise on his team's 2009 football schedule.
Bayles thought the Bulldogs had a complete 11-game schedule, but in June he found out that the Sept. 4 East Oktibbeha game wasn't going to happen. That left Bayles with a high school football rarity — back-to-back open dates.
He said he had looked around for a replacement, but found it difficult because other teams had already made out their schedules.
"I really don't like those two open dates, but there's not really anything we can do about it right now," he said.
McAdams opens its season at home against Thomastown on Aug. 21, before visiting Williams-Sullivan on Sept. 28.
EUPORA CLASSIC TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
The Lady Lions of Weir will open their 2009 fast-pitch softball schedule on Saturday when they join eight other teams for the Eupora Classic Tournament.
Weir faces Grenada at 9 a.m., Starkville at noon and Eupora at 1:30 p.m.
Other games for the event, which will be played on two fields, are as follows: 9 a.m. — Eupora vs. Starkville; 10:30 a.m. — Mooreville vs. New Hope and Cleveland vs. Tupelo; Noon — Grenada vs. Clarkdale; 1:30 p.m. — Grenada vs. Mooreville; 3 p.m. — New Hope vs. Starkville and Cleveland vs. Mooreville; 4:30 p.m. — New Hope vs. Clarkdale and Eupora vs. Tupelo; 6 p.m. — Eupora JV vs. Clarkdale JV.
LOPSIDED SERIES
When the University of Alabama-Birmingham plays host to the University of Southern Mississippi at Legion Field on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. the Blazers will be trying to do something they haven't done in the nine game series — win.
USM leads the series 9-0, including a 70-14 in Hattiesburg last season.
The first seven games between the two teams were competitive, before USM thumped UAB 37-7 in 2007.
LOOKING AT 2A NORTH
Two of the four MHSAA Class 2A north regions have six teams, while the other two have five each. The top four teams in each region advance to the playoffs.
Making up Region 2-2A are Ackerman, Eupora, East Webster, Hamilton, J.Z. George and West Lowndes. Region 1-2A features Baldwyn, Bruce, CAlhoun City, Hatley, Mantachie and Walnut.
Region 3-2A has Shelby Broad Street, Coahoma AHS, Coahoma County, Strayhorn and West Tallahatchie.
Region 4-2A is home to Mound Bayou John F. Kennedy, Greenville O'Bannon, Hollandale Simmons, West Bolivar and Williams-Sullivan.
SICK OF PITINO SAGA YET?
I've heard more about Rick Pitino's tryst that turned into disaster (actually, in my opinion, it was a disaster the minute he even considered it) than I care too.
While there have been many columns and stories written about the whole sordid affair, Ray Melick of the Birmingham news wrote an interesting column http://tinyurl.com/pj2qps you might want to check out.
