KOSCIUSKO —
“It was a lifetime experience,” Bernadette Skinner said of her family’s trip to compete in the 2011 Triple Play Fit Family Challenge in Los Angeles, Calif., in December. “It was a blessing.”
Skinner, along with husband, David, and twin daughters, Cecilia and Amelia, were one of five families selected from Boys & Girls Clubs across the country to compete in the challenge that incorporates activities for the mind, body and soul.
Prior to their plane ride to California, the Skinner family had a six-week training period where they had to try a new fruit or vegetable and exercise daily.
The twins recounted with excitement about flying to “Hollywood” and making new friends, Skinner said they also taped a segment to “Saved by the Bell” alum and television personality Mario Lopez for the television shows, “X-Factor,” and “Extra” along with the other participating families.
Lopez, also former B&G Club member, along with health advocates Dr. Val Jones, CEO of Better Health, LAC, Donna Richardson Joiner, fitness expert, served as coaches for the event.
Skinner explained there were three portions to the challenge.
She and Cecilia, following instructions and with a time limit, prepared a salad, while David and Amelia took on the physical task of tire race, jumping jacks and push ups. The task of putting a puzzle together was also done by the family.
The Porter family, members of the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County, Steven Point, Wisc., were named the grand prize winner. However, the Skinners with the other three families received prizes including Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect system with games and a basket of goodies from event-sponsor Coca-cola.
A ping-pong table in honor of the Skinners was presented to the club and is in the game area.
According to the Web, the Triple Play program, called “A Game Plan for the MIND, BODY and SOUL,” is supported by founding sponsor The Coca-Cola Company and the WellPoint Foundation to encourage kids to eat a balanced diet, become more physically active and increase their ability to engage in healthy relationships. During the Challenge, the five families learned and practiced healthy eating habits (MIND), were physically active (BODY) and spent quality time with each other (SOUL). Challenge activities included earning the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PC); trying new fruits and vegetables and eating smaller portions; and, participating in a family fitness night at their local Boys & Girls Club.
