KOSCIUSKO —
The Kosciusko Mayor and Board of Aldermen were visited by the Oprah Winfrey Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year Sabrina Caldwell during the Tuesday night meeting at City Hall.
“When I was named Youth of the Year – when they first announced it – I was shocked because I’ve never been named to something this big,” Caldwell, a senior at Kosciusko High School, said. “ I know that I’m going to go out and represent our community and the boys and girls club in a positive way.”
Caldwell told the board about her community involvement and how she serves as the secretary on the Mayor’s Youth Council and takes part in the Leadership and Keystone Clubs at the boys and girls club. Caldwell is also a Beta Club student and a member of the National Guard.
“After I graduate, I plan on going to Meridian Community College and majoring in physical therapy – That’s after I finish Basic Training this summer,” she said. “I want to thank everyone for their support and when I go to competition February 7-9 I hope that I am named winner of Mississippi and go on to D.C. and represent us in a good way.”
The board also approved the following:
–Minutes from the December 4 meeting
–Hire Betty Johnson as an E911 dispatcher
–Advertise for bids for building improvements on the Kosciusko Police Department. These include renovation of the hallway, bathrooms and break room as well as work on the gutters and some concrete work outside the building.
–A donation of $100 from St. Matthews Episcopal Church to the animal control department was accepted.
–Payment to Belinda Stewart Architects in the amount of $2,311.02 for work on The Strand Theater.
– Hire Sample and Hicks as the Community Development Block Grand administrator and Gardner Engineering as the CDBG engineer.
– Gardner Engineering as the airport engineer for the next five years.
– Reappoint Donnie Gladney to the Kosciusko Water and Light Board for another five-year term.
–Reappoint Kim Williams as a Kosciusko City School board member for another five-year term.
–A resolution honoring City of Kosciusko Court Clerk David Busbea on his retirement.
–Travel for KPD officers Jerry Coleman, Jimmy Evans, Danny Groves and Maurice Hawthorne to Complete Traffic/Tactical Control Tactics in Greenwood; E911 dispatchers LaToya Thompson and Jasmine Sharkey to Officer Involved Shooting/Critical Incident in Flowood; E911 Department employees Elizabeth Peteet, Debra Elmore and Shannon Mitchell to Responding to Fire/Rescue in Pearl; and Chad Spears to Fire Officer 1021-1-11 at the Fire Academy.

The board went into executive session to discuss the pay of street department’s Hubert Jones.
The next meeting will be February 5 at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall.
