Ellis urges residents to consult supes on jail project; Jail property rezoned 3-2

KOSCIUSKO — Following the 3-2 vote to rezone a portion of the land for the Attala County Jail project, Ward 3 Alderman Robert Ellis urged residents to contact their supervisor concerning the jail as they go through the building process.

Ellis, who recently spoke to the supervisors, sought to have the jail moved closer to Jefferson where the county maintenance shop sits and away from residential housing.

The estimated cost of the jail is $3.8 million. The facility will house the Attala County Sheriff’s Department and housing of approximately 65 inmates. The jail would continue to house both county and city prisoners.

Aldermen Marvin “Pop” Lawrence, Tim Kyle and John Sullivan were in favor of the rezoning, while Henry Daniel and Ellis were against the action.

The board approved the following:

– Angela Miller as the Retired Services Volunteer Program director. She will begin on March 1. Cockroft said input was sought from the volunteers.

– Sam Lawrence, Daniel Fortenberry and Ty McGee were hired as Parks and Recreation summer workers.

– John Bishop as a part-time firefighter.

– Ryan Rennhack as a volunteer firefighter.

– Historic Renovations of Yazoo was paid $43,083.38 for work on The Strand Theater. Cockroft said this phase of the project is nearly complete.

– Payment to Belinda Stewart Architects in the amount of $159.05.

– Payment to JBHM Architects for work on the Kosciusko Police Department in the amount of $5964.

– Payment to Windham and Lacey for audit work in the amount of $2,000.

– Give Cockroft the authority to sign the Mississippi Archives and History Grant. The grant is being sought for repair of stained glass windows at the Mary Ricks Thornton Cultural Center and the grant funds must flow through a certified municipality.

– Lease purchase 911 equipment for $227,440.85 over a five-year period.

– Lease purchase rate of 2.03 percent from Citizens National Bank.

– Travel for KPD Chief R.J. Adams, Capt. Chris Busbea, Investigator Mark Hill and officer Steve Allen for training.

– Claims docket
