Historical society offers pictorial history book beginning today

KOSCIUSKO — The Kosciusko-Attala Historical Society is launching a fundraising project this week which could well be labeled “remember when.”

The society is offering for sale an 80-page pictorial history entitled “From My Collections,” by Thomas E. Craft. It contains a total of 283 pictures of Attala County-Kosciusko people, buildings and residences taken from Craft’s collection. It contains pictures which were included in a DVD compiled in 2006 along with several other pictures which were submitted for the publication.

The booklets will be sold for $20 per copy and will go on sale Thursday, August 30, when Craft will hold a book signing beginning at 2 p.m. at the Mary Ricks Thornton Cultural Center. The books will also be available at the Attala County Library and at the Kosciusko-Attala Development Corporation office, or from any member of the historical society.

All proceeds from the sale will benefit the cultural center.

Craft, a member of the historical society, has had an interest in photography since receiving his first camera on his 14th birthday.  In the book’s introductory remarks, he tells of taking pictures for the Kos-Z-Hi-Daze, the Kosciusko High School newspaper. At Mississippi State University, he was able to use darkroom facilities further adding to his knowledge of photography.

Throughout his entire life in Kosciusko, his interest in photography has continued as advances were made and he updated his cameras and other equipment. His fascination with photos has resulted in a collection dating to the early 1900s. In addition to pictures he has taken, many are copies he has made through the years which capture the early days of activity on the courthouse square. The booklet contains many photos of homes, businesses, schools, and churches, also many structures no longer standing.

The book is dedicated to the memory of Craft’s deceased friends Dewitte Belk, Roby Coleman, T.D. Murphy Jr. and Pat Vanderford. He presented copies of the booklets to relatives of each of the deceased friends last week at the cultural center. They are Julie Taylor, Jennifer Cheek, daughters of Dewitte Belk; Beth Rhodes, daughter of Roby Coleman; Melanie McCafferty, daughter of T.D. Murphy Jr., and Linda Vanderford, wife of Pat Vanderford.

“Many people and events have made a profound impression at different periods in my life. With the photos, I will focus on a few of the memorable times shared with friends and neighbors who lived on South Natchez Street. My enjoyable memories of these people will always remain an important part of my life,” said Craft in his opening remarks of the booklet.

Assisting Craft in the compilation of the pictorial history were Judi Bell and George Ellen Chandler.
