Gov. Bryant brings Health Teen program to Lexington

KOSCIUSKO — A community town hall  meeting, featuring Gov. Phil Bryant, has been set for Wednesday, October 17, in Lexington to discuss teen issues.

The public is invited to Gov. Phil Bryant’s Healthy  Teens for a Better Mississippi at St. Paul’s Church of God in Christ’s William Dean Jr. Fellowship Hall from 5:30-7 p.m. The church is located at 17214 Highway 17 in Lexington.

There will be discussions on the rate of teen pregnancy in Mississippi and the state's initiative to reduce its incidence.

Bryant will discuss his five goals for addressing teen pregnancy, as outlined in his teen pregnancy prevention plan:

– To reduce the number of teen pregnancies, ages 8-19 by 15 percent by 2017;

– To reduce the percentage of repeat teenage births to 15% by 2017;

– To increase communication between the parents and teens about teen pregnancy issues;

– To increase peer-to-peer education to make wise choices as it relates to good health; and

– To build partnerships statewide

The purpose of the meeting is to educate the community and leaders about the perils of teen pregnancy and to establish partnerships to help improve the health of Mississippi youth and reduce the teen pregnancy rate throughout the state.

The Lexington meeting is the second in a series of statewide community meetings. The first was held in Jackson on September 28 in Jackson.

In addition to Bryant, the event will include speakers Sen. David Jordan, Sen. Sally Doty, Rep. Bryant Clark, Rep. Jason White, Judge Janace Harvey-Goree, MS Economic Council COO Vickie Powell.
