Skilled workers needed to fill jobs

KOSCIUSKO — While presenting the Attala County Board of Supervisors with complete results of the Mid-Mississippi Job Fair Monday, Kosciusko-Attala Development Corporation President Steve Zea said that welding positions are going unfilled in our area and surrounding area because of lack of skills.

“The most important message is that we’ve got to get some of our folk some additional skill levels,” Zea said. “If they had the skill levels, there are jobs out there. It’s that simple.

There are jobs going unfilled right here in Attala County and surrounding counties that would would make someone a very livable wage.”

Zea said an estimated 40-50 welding jobs are needed today.

Area companies including Taylor Machine Works in Louisville, Hunter Engineering in Durant and Anel Corporation in Winona were looking for welders at the job fair held on February 14 at the Attala County Coliseum.

And, if you were willing to move, Ingall’s from the Mississippi Coast was there looking for 4,000 applicants, Zea said.

“Right now, Holmes (Community College) is not producing enough (welders),” Zea said. “East Mississippi (Community College) doesn’t have enough of them.”

Hopefully discussions with community college and welding  employers will happen and aid in not only the training of welders but the job placement of those with the complete skills, Zea said.

Zea said the job fair was considered a success.

There were 916 resumes submitted, 112 on-site interviews conducted, 114 job offers made and 262 projected hires t o be made during the year.

Employers comments were:

– I was able to spot a possible “Housekeeper”.   I got a couple of strong Clerical resumes.

– Several job seekers Not professional dressed.

– Everything was good.  Maybe need to  look at having something in late afternoon so people can get off work or out of school.

– There were more qualified applicants than previous years.

– This was a great turn out today.

– Our applications are on line – Too early to judge how many will go on line and complete the information.

– Love meeting all the potential employees face to face.

– Very good Job Fair.

– Quality candidates/great turnout!  Thanks for all your help getting set up and throughout the day.

– Liked the couple of hours so people can come and go (instead of just am or pm)

– Did not make any offers but had a good pool of prospects if they go to website.

– Pool of job seekers not professionally dressed with no marketable resumes.

– Well-advertised, organized and attended.  Spoke with numerous prospective students for our adult learning program as well as a few graduate students.

This is the third job fair held in Kosciusko.
