Board members table McAdams baseball request

Attala County School Board members could not reach an agreement on which items to purchase from the request needs of the McAdams High School Baseball team during the board meeting on Monday night at the Kosciusko-Attala Vocational Center.

Mainly baseball apparel including cold-gear tops, pants, jerseys, shorts, caps and socks were listed.

Superintendent Larry Stevens recommended to approve the listed items with the exception of socks and caps.

Stevens said those items are considered personal items. Board President Linda Massey agreed.

Board Member Mack Willie Clark said that it was unfair to pick and choose items from the list of requests.

Noting that in a previous meeting, they simply approved the jerseys and pants for the Ethel High School baseball team.

At the November school board meeting, the board approved 25 uniforms for the EHS baseball team for a total of $5,000. MHS’ request was $3,700.

After much discussion, no agreement could be reached and the baseball needs of the McAdams team were tabled.

Timber

McCool resident Mack Blaine and the school board worked some kinks out on the agreement to get his timber out of woods adjoining Greenlee Elementary School.

Instead of exact date on the agreement, they agreed that when the ground was dry, he could retrieve the timber.

Teacher thanks district

McAdams High School English teacher Diane Grey expressed her love of teaching at high school for over 26 years to the board.

Grey, who is retiring at the end of the semester, invited the board to attend her retirement reception at First United Methodist Church in Kosciusko on Dec. 16.

The board approved the following:

–Minutes from the Nov. 4

–The amended budget for the current school year to add in Federal Programs dollars.

–Hire Mitchell Gordon as an appraiser for 16th Section land.

– Tree planting contract at $83 an acre on 16th Section land.

–16th Section leases and appraisals for Bonnie Harmon, Jimmy Harmon and Ollie Claire Smith and Daisy Allen.

–Hire Billy Joe Parker as a part-time custodian at EHS.

–Consent agenda – activity and club accounts, travel, bus easements for Jimmy Martin, James Moak, and Wimpy Winters, class trips, donations and Long Creek basketball schedule.

–Bids on the Read 180 program and computers. Federal Stimulus money is being used to pay for the items.

–The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Certification Statement

–Consolidation of the Title I, Title II, and Title IV application

No action

The board did not take action on the hiring of Bertha Moore as a long-term substitute at MHS.

No action was taken on the removal of asbestos from the two houses on the MHS campus.

An executive session was held on possible litigation on a 16th Section matter.
