KOSCIUSKO —
EHS Assistant Principal Jim Wood was hired as principal for the upcoming school year during the Attala County School Board meeting Monday night. Attala County Schools Superintendent Bryan Weaver said three were interviewed by a committee for the position.
He added that the transition would be smooth since he is already in the assistant principal role.
The promotion comes after the resignation of current principal Michael Ray. Wood currently serves as the fast pitch softball coach and football defensive coordinator.
The board also re-hired principals Lilia Fisher, Dietrich Harmon, Tony Holder and Jacqueline Sandifer.
Reading report
The monthly reading report on the 40 seventh and eighth grade Ethel High School students participating in reading tutorial showed approximately half of the students had improved.
With Ethel’s “Watch School” status due to low state test scores, grant funds were awarded to the school to provide a reading tutor for 90 days at $240 per day.
The board approved the following:
–Purchase promethean boards for the English teachers at EHS. Funds would come from a Federal allocation.
– Minutes from February 4 and 18.
–Bus easement for Margaret Nash.
–Financials: claims, club and activity accounts, advertise for depository bids, financial auditor for 2012-2013 school year.
–Pay afterschool tutors at McAdams with Title funds.
–Pay bus drivers $4 a day for trips to Allied Health.
–Special Education IDEA Part B Amendment.
–Plan for the safety and threat management in the schools. Weaver said this was to give more precise response to particular situations and they are looking to have drills in the future.
–Criteria for the superintendent's evaluation. It will be used next spring.
–Calendar for the upcoming school year that will include a fall break.
– One of the inclement weather days will be used on April 2. Another day will be approved during the April meeting.
–Due to the holiday, the April board meeting will be held on April 2.

Kosciusko City Schools Superintendent Dr. Tony McGee said that he felt the staff for the upcoming school year was set following approval of hires Monday night at the school board meeting.

– Tiffany Tierra Fletcher, 20, was arrested for first offense shoplifting on M.L.K. Drive by Capt. Herbert Dew. -
City considers using service to find retailers
With the current economy and the merger of Merchants and Farmers Bank and Renasant Bank, Kosciusko Mayor Jimmy Cockroft presented the idea of hiring a firm to aid in the recruitment of retailers during the board of aldermen meeting at city hall May 7.
