KOSCIUSKO —
There are so future vegetable farmers inside the Oprah Winfrey Boys & Girls Club this summer.
Approximately 16 boys, ages 9-15, are part of the from the Garden to the Table Character Club and are learning how to tend a garden and reap the benefits of fresh vegetables.
So far, the group has visited the farm of Melvin and Mary Williams off of Highway 19 and are going through all the stages of gardening.
Mary said she and her husband have a five acre area where they raise vegetables from “A to Z” and they have given the boys a few rows where they are growing tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, squash and green beans.
She said the group has been learning the different stages of growing and have done the physical labor of planting, weeding, watering, fertilizing and picking their vegetables.
On June 27, the boys’ first reward from the garden was green beans, which they picked, snapped and shared with other members at the club for lunch.
OWB&G staff member Ron Thornton, who oversees the group, said the bunch is eager to go and check out the garden and they don’t shy away from the work.
Kentraun Huffman, 11, said he enjoys the picking of the vegetables the most and hopes to one day have a garden as an adult.
While Kevin Smith, 14, enjoys learning about how the plants are growing.
Most of the group are newcomers to farming, but not Joshua Dodd.
His family has grown vegetables and he said he continuing to learn about farming through the experience.
And the best part to Dodd – “Putting the seeds in the ground and kicking the dirt on top.”
