HATTIESBURG —
Laurel/Jones County took 14-12 and 12-11 wins over Kosciusko on Wednesday night to take the Dixie Youth AAA State Championship.
Kosy went into the final day of the tournament undefeated. Laurel took early leads in both games, but the tough Kosy team fought back to tie the contest in both cases before falling the last inning.
Kosciusko won its Monday game in dramatic fashion as Walker Yuille broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run homer to propel his team to an 8-6 victory.
Kosy trailed 6-5 in the fifth, but Edwin Smith singled with two outs and Logan Burchfield doubled him in to tie the game, setting up Yuille's heroics. Fancher closed Laurel out in fine fashion in the top of the sixth. He went all six innings to pick up the win on the mound, striking out seven in the process.
Riley popped a single and double and drove in a run for Kosy in the game, while Smith had two singles and Cody Weeks had a double and two RBIs.
Clark Dean, Fancher, Cole Frank and Parker Belk had a single each, while Frank drove in a run. Riley and Fancher scored twice each, while Dean, Smith, Burchfield and Yuille each scored once.
Kosy fell behind to Pascagoula 2-0 in the fourth inning on Saturday, but scored four runs in the bottom of the inning and three in the fifth to take the 7-3 win.
Smith struck out four to pick up the win in relief, while he also belted two singles and scored two runs. Yuille ripped a double and two singles, while Fancher and Weeks doubled and Burchfield, Dean and Riley each singled. Yuille, Dean, Fancher and Weeks each had an RBI, while Smith, Yuille and Fancher scored two runs each.
