Court term ends with several continuances

Two women accused of harming or taking advantage of the elderly have been granted continuances until the next court term.

Brenda J. Potts, 49, of McCool has been charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult.

According to court documents, Potts slapped an elderly man with an open hand in the face at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Kosciusko on March 11.

In a separate case, Alice Paquet has been charged with attempted abuse of a vulnerable adult. Paquet made herself the beneficiary to receive 60 percent or $766,013.69 of a life insurance policy upon an elderly man’s death. The Attorney General’s office will prosecute the case.



Manslaughter case

Kenneth J. Newbegin’s manslaughter case will not be heard until next term as well.

Newbegin, 20, was driving a Lincoln LS at a high rate of speed with Joseph Stonestreet and another passenger Jacob Simmons in early October.

When they came to the intersection of Highway 14 West and Highway 43 South, the vehicle went airborne off the road and struck a tree.

Stonestreet, 17, of Kosciusko, died of head trauma after he was thrown 30 to 35 yards from the vehicle. The investigation was conducted by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.



Miller’s Grocery

robber charged

Nicole Prince, who was originally charged with the armed robbery of Miller’s Grocery at the Highway 19 and 14 intersection, plead guilty to a lesser charge of accessory after the fact of armed robbery will serve five years in prison.

Nick Prince, who was also involved in the robbery, has not had his day in court.



Tripplett to

see jail time

Bobby Tripplett Jr., plead guilty to one count of burglary of a building other than a dwelling and one count of burglary of a dwelling. He was sentenced to five years on the first count and seven years with four years post-release supervision to the second count. He will also pay a $2,000 fine and restitution.

– Thyara R. Veasley; two counts of fraud by mail or other means of communication and two counts of identity fraud; one year and one day to serve with three years supervised probation.

– Monica Brown, five years probation for felony shoplifting.

– Dwayne Seawood; bill of information; seven years with five years post-release supervision; $500 fine.

– William Scottie Aull; two counts of burglary of a building other than a dwelling; seven years and six years and 364 days post-release supervision and restitution.

Thomas Ellis was found guilty of first offense driving under the influence at a hearing on Friday and was sentenced to attend classes and pay fine and court costs.
