With a little help from the Mississippi Blues Commission and Kosciusko native Charlie Musselwhite, Kosciusko will be placed on the Mississippi Blues Trail this spring.
Tonya Threet, Kosciusko-Attala Development Corporation vice president of community development, said this project has been in the works for more than a year and will finally happen on Friday, April 24, during the Natchez Trace Festival.
Musselwhite, a blues singer and harmonica player, said in a recent interview with the London Times, that he was born in interesting times. Those times were partying with Elvis Presley as a teenager, calling John Lee Hooker his best friend and playing on Tom Waits’s recent recordings.
It has been said that actor Dan Aykroyd describes Musselwhite as his inspiration for his character in “The Blues Brothers.”
The Mississippi Blues Trail, once completed, will have more than 120 historical markers and sites throughout the state.
It’s not just promoted on a state-wide level, Threet told the Kosciusko Mayor and Board of Aldermen Tuesday, Jan. 13, but also around the world.
Threet added that Mississippi is the only state with a blues trail.
According to information from the MBC, a panel of historians and blues scholars have developed an inventory of sites, and each being identified with a distinctive cast marker fearing high resolution maps, photographs and a text on the reverse side.
Some of the markers will be interactive, Threet said, and it is possible that Musselwhite’s could be one of those.
Visitors to the marker may be able to hear a message from Musselwhite or possibly download some of his music.
The location of the marker has not been determined but goes in a place of influence by the artist.
Threet said she has learned that Musselwhite has memories of the Spann Building, now Merchants and Farmers Bank, and harmonica player Charlie Peeler in the downtown area.
Although the most markers are in the Delta region, Musselwhite’s marker will be nearby to Catfish Alley in Columbus,
The marker cost is $2,000 with $500 each being put up by the City of Kosciusko, Kosciusko-Attala Development and Kosciusko Tourist Promotion Council. Threet will also be seeking funds for the Attala County Board of Supervisors.
