The staff of The Star-Herald came on home with a handful of awards at the 2008 Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Mississippi Press Association on Saturday at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi.
The Star-Herald competes in the largest category for weekly papers with circulation 4,000 and above.
“We are very proud to have received awards in this year’s competition and we hope to bring home more next year,” General Manager Cindi Compton said. “It is rewarding for our staff to be honored.”
First place award for Best Sports Action Photo when to photographer Stan Beall for a shot of Weir’s Cramer Miller during football season.
News editor Leslie N. Dees and former intern Matthew Breazeale took home second in the Best Planned Series of Stories category for “Stories of Survival” about cancer survivors, Roberta Fuller, Adrienne Wamble and Sheriff William Lee.
People & Events editor Nancy Green along with Dees took third for Best Lifestyle Page or Section.
Sports Editor Austin Bishop received third in the Best Game Story category.
Dees also took home a third place award for Best General News Photo. Her photo was taken at the “His Last Days” the annual Passion Play at Kosciusko First United Methodist Church.
