Lady Whippets off to 7-1 start

The Lady Whippets of Kosciusko High School went into Spring Break with a 7-1 fast-pitch softball record, and are looking for good things to continue when they return to action in earnest next week.

Kosy is set to visit Winona on Monday, Neshoba Central on Tuesday and New Hope on Thursday, March 25, before hosting Neshoba Central on March 26.

The Lady Whippets, who split a pair of games in the East Webster Invitational on Saturday, are 1-0 in Region 4-4A play thanks to a convincing 15-0 win over visiting Amanda Elzy on Thursday. Kosy resumes region play on March 29 when it hosts MHSAA Class 4A power Cleveland.

Kaitlin Young was dominating on the mound in the win over Elzy, striking out all nine batters she faced as the Lady Whippets won the game in three innings.

Kosy hit for nine runs in the second inning and six in the third, needing only five hits in the process.

Allison Ray smashed a pair of triples and drove in four runs for the winners in the game, while Cassandra Cobb had a double and Young and Kaitlyn Hicks ripped a single each.

Lauren Tharp, Lyn Browning, Cobb and Hicks each had an RBI, while Hicks, Mackenzie Dickerson, Coy Ballard and Katie Ferguson scored two runs. Ferguson also had two RBIs in the game.

Also scoring runs for Kosy were Haleigh Warren, Cobb, Jordan Gray, Browning, Kali Roberts and Victoria Sheffield.

Kosy and host East Webster hooked up in a pitcher's duel on Saturday, with the Lady Wolverines scoring the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first to take the 1-0 win.

Hicks smacked a double for the Lady Whippets, while Warren, Dickerson and Browning each picked up a single.

Young did not allow an earned run in the game, and struck out nine in six innings of play.

The second game of the day saw Kosciusko score four times in the first and two in the third to take a 6-2 win over Nanih Waiya.

Browning had two hits and an RBI for KHS, while Ray and Dickerson each added singles. Katie Ferguson scored a pair of runs for the Lady Whippets. Ray picked up the win on the mound, striking out five.
